DIY gates, drawings, diagrams, sketches, design. How to make swing gates with your own hands? Video: an example of hand-made up-and-over gates

When arranging a local area, installing a fence with a wicket and gate is of great importance. But if the installation of a fence and gate does not cause any particular difficulties, then during the manufacture of the gate a number of questions arise. After all, you want the assembled structure to last for many years. Experts will tell you what steps to take when installing metal gates with your own hands.

Method of decorating metal sheets

Project development

Any construction begins with the development of a project, and installing swing gates made of metal with your own hands is no exception. Therefore, before starting assembly and installation work, it is necessary to draw up detailed sketches of the future structure. The drawings should indicate the location of all elements, including hinges and canopies, stiffeners, and a locking mechanism for fixing the sashes.

Decorated doors, but can be sheathed with ordinary sheets of metal

Metal gates made of solid canvas do not look very aesthetically pleasing. To add a touch of variety and give the gates artistic value, they are decorated with forged elements. You can make them yourself using cold forging technology, or you can purchase beautiful metal elements at specialized retail outlets.

At the project development stage, it is important to indicate the dimensions of the gate with maximum accuracy, this will allow you to calculate the amount of material required and draw up a preliminary estimate.

You can develop sketches yourself, or use ready-made ideas by viewing drawings with work samples.

Gate leaves

A metal gate leaf is a frame covered with sheet metal plates.

Most often, when installing gates for a summer residence , As a material for the frame, profile pipes with a square 40x40x2 mm or rectangular 40x30x2 mm section are used. They are easy to use, have sufficient strength and relatively low weight (2.31 kg per linear meter). For comparison, a pipe of the same cross-section for a gate with a wall thickness of 2.5 mm weighs 2.8 kg, and 3 mm is already 3.36 kg. Although some craftsmen still prefer to use round pipes with a diameter of 30–40 mm in their work.

  1. When starting to manufacture gate leaves, you need to take care of arranging the workplace. While experienced welders with many years of experience, who have been installing metal gates for many years, are able to assemble frame structures by weight, beginners are unlikely to be able to do this. Therefore, it is better to spend half an hour preparing a flat area on which you can easily lay out and weld the entire frame, than to remake the metal gate later.
  2. Metal gates are distinguished by their increased quality and durability, in the frames of which the pipes in the corners are connected not end-to-end, but diagonally. To ensure that the structure does not warp during assembly, you should carefully measure the pipes when cutting, making sure that the cuts are made at an angle of 45 degrees. An error of 1–2 degrees will result in a distortion of several centimeters on the opposite side.
  3. Grind cut pipes for gates at the cut points to remove burrs and improve the quality of welds.
  4. Stock up on corner clamps. Having previously assembled and fixed frame, you can check the correctness of the angles and the identity of the diagonals. Thus, you can easily install high-quality gates with your own hands, even if you have never done such work before.
  5. First tack the assembled frame by spot welding and only then lay continuous seams.
  6. To give the structure greater strength, be sure to weld several stiffeners.
  7. Once you've finished assembling the frame, sand and caulk the seams.
  8. To ensure that the welds do not break during operation, before making the final connection between the frame and the sheet, drill drain holes on the underside of the horizontal surfaces of the pipes to remove condensate.

We weld steel

When buying steel sheet, most likely you will have to face a limited choice of size. Sheets with dimensions of 1000 x 2000 or 1500 x 2500 are usually widely sold. Therefore, in order to save money, when designing and assembling gates with your own hands, it is still wiser to set the height and width of the sash based on these dimensions. Choose cold-rolled steel, it is much harder, less likely to ripple, and therefore has a smoother and better surface.

When making a purchase, check the diagonals of the sheet so as not to align the corners and lose length during the process.

Start connecting the iron sheet and frame from the center to the edges to minimize the likelihood of waves forming. As with frame assembly, spot weld first and then add seams.

If you have to use multiple sheets of iron to sheath the frame, place the connecting seam on the stiffener to give it increased strength and rigidity.

After assembling the main parts, the carved elements are welded if they are provided for in the project.

Loops

Depending on the weight of the leaf, the appropriate canopy model and hinges for metal gates are selected. Sometimes, with a significant weight of the structure, for better load distribution, it is necessary to place not 2, but 3 or even 4 hinges on each half of the gate. However, we do not recommend intentionally making your country gate heavier by using a thick-walled pipe or thick steel. Indeed, in this case, the installation of supports requires significant modifications.

Sometimes during operation, the hinges come off the gate along with fragments of the metal to which they are welded. To prevent this from happening, you should strengthen the hinge attachment points by welding additional iron plates 4–5 mm thick.

Support pillars

There are higher requirements for installing gates than for wickets, because they have more mass. The service life of the iron gates depends on how competently the installation of the support pillars is carried out. The quality of the soil plays a huge role in installation. Heaving soils with high groundwater levels cause additional difficulties during installation; all shortcomings made during installation will be noticeable after the first winter.

To prevent the support pillars from becoming warped, they are spaced apart with jumpers. But since the top crossbar limits the entry of cars into the yard, they are often located underground.

Procedure for installing supports

If new support pillars are used in the manufacture of gates, then they must be concreted one at a time.

  1. Dig 2 pits at least 1 meter deep with a wall width of 50–70 cm, at a given distance from each other.
  2. Using a level, set the first support strictly vertically and fill it with concrete mixture to 2/3 of the depth of the pit.
  3. To prevent accidental collapse of the support when the cement mixture is hydrated, it is additionally fixed (temporarily welded with jumpers to sections of the fence or old posts).
  4. After the concrete has hardened, hang the gate leaf on a fixed support.
  5. The second sash is hung on the second pillar and installed freely in the prepared pit.
  6. Level the structure.
  7. The sashes are fixed in a rigid position by placing spacers between them to ensure an even gap between them.
  8. A transverse jumper is welded to the free support, flush with the ground surface. It will prevent the post from sagging and falling off its hinges.
  9. At the top of the metal gate, a crossbar is welded between the supports to spread them open and secure (if it will restrict the entry of vehicles into the yard, it can be cut off after the work is completed).
  10. Fill the support with concrete mixture to 2/3 of the depth of the pit and leave to harden.
  11. Before the final filling of the supports with concrete, I dig a trench approximately 30 cm deep between the support pillars, and lay an additional lintel in it, carefully welding it to the pillars.
  12. The supports are concreted flush with the ground surface.

Brick supports

If you have to attach metal gates to brick pillars, then the support rails are welded to the mortgages, and then the hinges are installed and the doors are hung.

When marking places for hinges, be sure to use a water level or laser level. This is the only way to achieve perfect evenness of the sashes.

If you take a responsible approach to preliminary calculations, accurately measure each element, and ensure that angles and a single plane are maintained during the installation process, then making metal gates with your own hands will turn into a fun and interesting activity. Which will help you save some money and realize your design ambitions and construction skills.

Having conceived the construction of any type of fencing for your country house or during the construction of such a facility as a car garage, in any case the question arises of how to make a gate with your own efforts.

Types of gates

Before you start purchasing various materials necessary for further construction, as well as starting the work itself, it is very important to understand in general whether you want sliding gates, a sliding gate you can quickly make with your own hands, or some other type.

If you do not pay timely attention to all the various important details and thus choose not the best design, you can unfortunately doom yourself to additional not only financial, but also time costs

One of the simplest options, which in practice can most often be seen in a country house, is a swing gate with an additional built-in gate or a gate installed directly next to it.

This gate design consists primarily of two pillars. The gate leaves, as well as the gates themselves, are installed on hinges welded to the support posts.

Depending on the wishes of the house owners and the advice of the builders, they are sometimes attached to the inside of the support, and sometimes to the outside. Actually, in the future, this will have an impact on how the gate leaves will open - outward/inward.

Very often, if you look at a photo of such gates, you will notice that they are made entirely of high-quality wood. An important point that is worth paying attention to: when creating sashes, they should in no case be too massive. Otherwise, the load on the installed hinges and the support pillars themselves will be too large.

You should always remember that the parts for suspension in size, as well as in strength properties, should ideally correspond to the weight of the selected sashes.

Despite the fact that this design has a huge number of different advantages, unlike many others, it also has its disadvantages. For example, over time, the support pillars may tilt, or, which also happens quite often, the sashes may sag.

However, it is worth keeping in mind that this kind of shortcomings can only appear in one case - if the installation technology was initially violated or if the weight of the sashes was incorrectly calculated.

Advantages of sliding gates

In the last few years, sliding gates have become especially popular. In principle, drawings of such gates can be found in the public domain on almost any resource. Their peculiarity lies in the fact that they are divided into several subspecies and it is necessary to choose, first of all, depending on specific conditions.

It is worth keeping in mind that this gate option is only suitable if there is sufficient space along the fence that has been installed. Otherwise, when opening, the movable sash simply will not be able to move.

When planning to make sliding gates, it is worth keeping in mind that their installation is somewhat more complicated than, for example, swing-type gates. On the sides of the driveway, when installing this popular type of gate, rather bulky pillars are most often installed directly from white or red brick.

Rollers are subsequently mounted on them. They are the ones that support the clamps, as well as the staples.

Lift gates

This is an ideal option for later equipping them, for example, in a garage. If you are looking for ideal protection in the form of a gate for a closed passage to the courtyard of a house, then this type of gate is not suitable due to the fact that they limit the height.

Moreover, such gates should always be quite simple to open and, accordingly, close by slightly lifting and then moving the entire leaf sharply upward to an even horizontal position.

Most often, the leaf for this type of gate is made of metal, which is then sheathed with either high-quality wood or any other material.

In any case, you should proceed to installing the gate only after absolutely all the drawings and instructions have been studied in detail. Only then are the materials that may be needed prepared and the structure assembled.

Note!

In this article we will try to tell you how to make swing gates with your own hands. You will understand that there is nothing complicated about it. When producing a sash, the most difficult thing is to weld the frame. If you do not know how to use welding, then hire a welder for a couple of hours.

How to make a gate with your own hands - choosing materials

Gates can be made of wood or metal. Please note that you are unlikely to be able to make decorative gates yourself with curved lines using forging; only a professional can do this. To make decorative gates you need equipment, a special room, expensive tools and, of course, experience. It is better to buy such gates ready-made. It would be wiser for a home craftsman to make a regular gate with a metal frame covered with profiled sheets.

How to make a gate with your own hands - installation of supports

If the yard is already fenced with a fence with support posts and a gate, then this greatly simplifies the matter. Secure the hinges by welding directly on them. If there are no supports, then you need to perform a number of simple steps.

  • Treat the metal supports with primer and paint them.
  • Depending on the width of the gate, you need to dig 2 holes 1.5 meters deep.
  • Place a cushion of sand and gravel at the bottom of the pit.
  • Insert the supports into the holes and secure them with reinforcement.
  • Align the supports plumb and fill with concrete.

Hinges can only be installed after the concrete has completely hardened.

How to make a gate with your own hands - gate frame

To make the frame correctly, you need to prepare a drawing of the metal structure in advance and at this stage adhere to a certain sequence of actions.

  • In accordance with the required dimensions indicated in the drawing, cut the metal pipe strictly at an angle of 45 degrees.
  • The frame must be assembled on a flat horizontal surface and immediately secured by welding.
  • Check the internal dimensions and compare the diagonals of the resulting frame.
  • Make the necessary adjustments and weld the frame completely.
  • In the sash where the gate is not provided, weld several corners from the inside for reinforcement.
  • In the second leaf, assemble a special opening in which the gate door will be fixed.
  • Once you have finished preparing the door opening, assemble the door. According to the prepared dimensions, assemble the frame of the gate in a strictly rectangular shape.
  • The rigidity of the gate door should be at the same level as the ribs on the leaf.
  • To give the structure additional rigidity, weld metal triangles in the corners.
  • Weld 2 cross members to the frame.
  • According to the drawing, weld the canopies and bolts in the required places.
  • After welding, the elements are ground and primed.
  • Paint the structure.

How to make a gate with your own hands - covering the frame with corrugated sheets

After the frame has dried, you can use corrugated sheeting to cover the frame. Place the profiled sheet on the frame and carefully attach it using rivets or self-tapping screws. The use of rivets allows you to achieve an attractive appearance.

Rivets and self-tapping screws must be secured in the recesses of the corrugated sheet. Consumption: for 1 square meter of corrugated sheeting you need to use at least 6 rivets or self-tapping screws. This quantity is due to the fact that in addition to the weight of the gate, they must withstand strong wind loads. After fixing the sheets of corrugated sheets, you can begin hanging the gate on the hinges.

How to make a gate with your own hands - installation nuances

Before installing swing gates, you need to make sure that the ground surface is even. Since most craftsmen make gates that can open in both directions, keep in mind that gates that open “pull” open more conveniently and last longer. Such gates are difficult to break open from the street side, since more force must be applied against the direction of opening than in the direction “along” the gate. This is important, because in critical situations every minute is valuable.

Making your own gates from corrugated sheets is a reliable and economical way to protect your property from prying eyes and uninvited guests. This entire system can be automated, which will improve the practicality and functionality of using the gate. Automated equipment is used for this.

When arranging a summer cottage or a country house, the question arises of how to make a gate with your own hands. Before starting the work process, you should decide on the type, materials and installation method. Taking into account all the nuances, you can make the gate yourself, without resorting to the help of professionals. Each type of gate is different from each other and has its own characteristics and quality characteristics. They are worth considering in more detail.

Swing type

In the photo of the gate you can see the easiest model to implement. The design of this plan is equipped with a gate. This is a fairly common option for a private home. Pillars are used as a basis; they are installed in width. The third post is necessary in order to establish the exact width of the gate.

Mounting occurs according to the following gate scheme:

First, the gate leaves and gates are installed on welded hinges that are located on the posts. This is an important stage, because depending on it in the future the direction of their discovery will be determined.

In general, sashes are frames made of metal. Other options are also possible, for example, a profile pipe, or a corner that is sheathed with a metal sheet, wood, or corrugated board.

There is a manufacturing option that involves using exclusively wood. In this case, it is worth securing the boards to a reinforced frame.

Heavy gate structures should not be used, as this places a significant load on the hinges and support posts. It is best to adhere to the weight of the sashes. A closing device is useful for the lock's hinge; you can use a powerful latch.

This type is really easy to install. The work can be done independently. It is worth considering the disadvantages in this case as well.

During installation, the support pillars may tilt, as well as the sashes may sag. This drawback is observed if the installation was initially broken. Reasons also include incorrect calculation of the weight of the sashes. It is important to deepen the foundation of the supports. Heavy material will make the situation worse. The weight of the loops must match the material.

The advantages of this choice are as follows:

  • economical, fairly compact placement, there is no need to clear additional space for installation;
  • easy installation work.

The working process

For a successful final result, you need instructions for installing the gate yourself. If the weight of the gate is normal, then the choice of metal poles made from pipes is considered optimal. Their diameter averages about 80-100 mm.

A profiled pipe with a similar diameter is also suitable. This type of support elements copes with the task perfectly.

The following installation methods can be distinguished:

  • clogging;
  • concreting.

If we are talking about the first method, then the depth to which the pillars are driven is 1.2-1.3 m. This type has its advantages. Among them, reliability and speed of work are of particular importance.

You should drill the hole you need. This should be a depth of half the future depth of the pillar.
Columns should be installed in the wells. You can hammer them in with a sledgehammer or impact head. When doing this, pay attention to the verticality of the stand.

The next step is to attach the posts to the fence posts. Then you need to weld the hinges. Designate a place for this in advance.

After this, you should hang the doors on the hinges. At the same time, the correct convergence of the elements to the central part is checked.
The second installation method is concreting.

This method increases rigidity as well as stability. This method will require the use of heavy and wide sashes.

Reinforcement is not carried out. You will need a reinforcing glass. The workflow steps for beautiful homemade gates look like this:

  • drilling The diameter is about 200 – 250 mm, the depth is about 1.9 mm;
  • prepare sand and crushed stone, they will be needed to fill the bottom of the hole. The components should be compacted carefully, each layer should be about 100 mm;
  • the pillar is installed directly on a bed of sand and gravel;
  • It is worth pouring the solution around its area. Until it hardens, it is important to install the post vertically. Use supports as anchors.

You can use a reinforced structure for installation. In this case, installation work is carried out in the same way as without the use of reinforcement.

conclusions

After carefully studying the drawings, as well as step-by-step instructions, you can do all the work yourself. It is necessary to pay attention to the selection of necessary materials and get into the flow of work.

It is best to carry out work together with a person who has experience in this area. Then the quality and duration of work will pleasantly surprise you.

DIY gate photo

Do-it-yourself swing gates are one of the most common types of gates, which are chosen when improving small private plots and large private areas. The choice of these particular gates is justified by the fact that they are easy to install and reliable during active use. By installing such gates on your site, you can not only protect your property, but also save money. Below we will look at the features of such structures and figure out how to install them yourself.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like every design, such gates have their own advantages and disadvantages; we will consider them in more detail below:

  1. Advantages:
  • relatively low cost, which will be a pleasant bonus for the gates being installed;
  • ease of installation;
  • long service life of the installed structure;
  • installation can be done on your own;
  • installation can be performed with your own design modifications;
  • if there are no restrictions in volume, then accordingly there will be no restrictions on passing transport;
  • you have the opportunity to choose on your own what material you will make the structure from, respectively, from suitable options.
  1. Flaws:
  • for durable installation, it will be necessary to bury the pillars quite deeply, and this is not always easy to do with your own hands;
  • concreting these pillars takes a lot of time, and if concreted incorrectly, the pillars may warp over time;
  • a very large space will be required to install such a barrier;
  • it is unsafe to use such structures in strong winds, because it will be almost impossible to control the doors;
  • When installing an electric drive, you must purchase several wires to close/open the gate, which will increase the cost of your purchase.

As you can see, the advantages of such structures outweigh the disadvantages, and if you live in a region where strong gusty winds are not the norm, feel free to proceed with the installation of swing gates on your site.

Types of metal structures

Before you start assembling your new gate, it will be important to decide on its design. The choice should be made taking into account a number of features, the main one of which is the frequency of operation. Using metal you can make various variations, we will consider each of them separately.

Single leaf

Iron gates of this type are not very popular. This is a solid canvas that is not particularly practical to use. In order for them to work perfectly, it is important to reliably strengthen the supports; a lot of money will have to be spent on this. When you decide to install the structure in a garage, take care of constructing a powerful and reliable metal frame, and also do not forget to attach the hinges. The disadvantages include the need for space for the sash to function.

Bivalve

The most popular and practical to use. You can install them yourself on your site without any difficulties. The structure is made of 2 canvases that are the same in size, therefore, you will need to make a frame from two frames and cover them with sheet material.

Double doors with gate

They are very practical for daily use. They are manufactured like the previous design, the only difference is the presence of a special gate on one leaf. If you plan to install this type of structure in a garage, you must choose a mortise type of gate.

How to make swing gates with your own hands

By following the guide given in this article, you can make swing gates yourself. To do this, you will need to strictly adhere to the drawing, because the work requires a precise approach. If it is difficult for you to draw up a drawing yourself, then diagrams and sketches of such structures will not be difficult to find on the Internet, which can be taken as a basis.

Create a sequence of actions:

  • foundation and pillars;
  • frame work;
  • sheathing

Let's look at each step in more detail below.

The basis of the structure will be a metal frame; its fastening must be done in the entrance opening. It will also be necessary to install strong supports. When creating a drawing, mark the markings on it, as well as the locations of the main objects of the future structure. The optimal parameters will be the following: height 2 m, and the length of each leaf is also 2 m. The leaves can be made with 1 or 2 horizontal crossbars, which act as stiffeners.

For additional reinforcement, you can make 2 diagonal and 1 transverse crossbars.

Installation of pillars

Work on installing swing gates should begin with the installation of support pillars. You can choose a concrete or brick pillar, a wooden beam, but as practice shows, it is better to give preference to metal structures. If you choose brick pillars, then you need to lay pipes or channels inside them, and you will need to remove the embedded corners from the steel corner or their reinforcement in order to subsequently attach the racks with hinges.

Metal pillars must be concreted to a depth of at least one meter. This indicator should be equal to the depth of soil freezing. A reinforced foundation is also laid under the brick pillar to a depth of one meter.

Algorithm for installing support pillars from pipes:

  • clean the pipes from rust and then degrease them with a suitable substance;
  • prime the surface of the prepared pipe, then paint it to match the selected profiled sheet;
  • measure the width of the future doors, in which dig two holes 1-1.5 m deep;
  • Place sand and crushed stone at the bottom of the dug holes. You should get a pillow 20-30 cm thick;
  • the support post is installed in the prepared pit and secured with reinforcement;
  • Using a building level, level the position of the pillars;
  • Fill the hole with concrete, which you prepare from fine crushed stone, river sand and cement.

The resulting foundation should be left to harden for at least a week. If the doors are heavy, with forged elements, then the drying period for the foundation should be increased to two weeks. While the concrete dries, you can start making canvases and frames.

Installation of the foundation and pillars should be carried out in the warm season.

Manufacturing

Now you can start making the frame for the swing gates. To do this, prepare the site where you will work. You have to follow the following instructions:

  • the pipe that you will use for the frame must be cleaned and degreased, then primed and painted;
  • in most cases, the doors are rectangular in shape, but there are exceptions. It is worth understanding that if the upper edge of the gate has a rounded shape, then the pipe will need to be bent; for this it is better to contact professional craftsmen;
  • cut the pipe according to the dimensions according to the drawing, cut angle 45C;
  • Place the prepared pipes on the work surface, check the evenness of the diagonals using a tape measure;
  • Now you can grab the frame by welding;
  • again check the evenness of the corners and diagonals, if necessary, trim them and finally weld the pipes;
  • it is necessary to weld a corner on the inside of the frame, keep the angle between the joints at 45C;
  • Weld the so-called “kerchiefs” at the corners of the frame, this is necessary to give additional strength to the frame;
  • Now you need to weld the crossbars to the frame. Experts recommend placing horizontal crossbars at a distance of 40-50 cm from the bottom and top edges;
  • If you plan to install a lock, now is the time to make a box for it from sheet iron. It will provide reliable protection for the mechanism from the effects of precipitation;
  • the plumb lines must be moved from the support pillars to the side posts of the frame being manufactured;
  • attach the awning counterparts;
  • sand the areas where welding was done, treat them with a primer and paint.

The algorithm for installing swing gates with your own hands is not as complicated as it might seem at first glance; follow the instructions given and you will certainly succeed.

At the next stage, it’s worth thinking about how to cover the swing gates. In this case, corrugated sheeting would be the best choice. Seam the fabric in accordance with the following recommendations:

  • Place the corrugated sheet on top of the prepared frame and attach it with steel rivets and self-tapping screws. Decorative rivets will look aesthetically pleasing, but if repairs are necessary, it will be difficult to dismantle the canvas.
  • The corrugated sheeting should be fixed only in recessed areas, these are the so-called “waves”.
  • The number of screws per 1 m2 is 8-10 pieces. This is the optimal indicator.

Once you have finished covering the frame, the finished sashes can be hung on the hinges on the support posts. In this form, the gate can be used quite well, but if desired, you can improve it by adding an automatic system for opening the doors.

Installation of automation

The automatic system for swing gates is quite practical and you can easily install it yourself. To make the gate automatic, you will need to install at least a couple of drives, then connect the control unit and buy at least one device to control this system. In order to achieve greater safety when opening the gate, you can also install a warning lamp and photocells.

Please note that different drives should be selected if the sashes open inwards and if the sashes open outwards.
