DIY wall clock decoupage. Decoupage of a clock: interesting ideas for creating an original piece of furniture Decoupage of a finished wall clock

Currently, DIY watch decoupage has gained enormous popularity! This is not surprising: in an age of stress, sometimes you want to do something for the soul, and if it also has a functional and aesthetic purpose, then this hobby is simply doomed to success!

Watch decoupage technique

If previously it was difficult to get materials and templates for decoupage, now they are available in abundance in any bookstore or creativity department. You can easily purchase stencils, dials, blanks, hands, accessories or other attributes for decoupage watches. Therefore, this newfangled hobby is an acceptable option for beginners.

Let's look at the technique of decoupaging a watch with your own hands step by step.

  1. Preparing the stencil. So, you purchased a watch blank in advance from a craft store (as in the photo).
  2. The surface of the workpiece should first be prepared: sanded if the watch is wooden or degreased if it is plastic.
  3. Create a background image as in the photo. You can choose any style depending on your preferences or the interior features of the room you want to decorate with a future masterpiece.
  4. Glue the selected picture onto the blank (see photo).
  5. Advice! Torn edges are easier to mask, so it’s better not to cut out the image, but simply tear it off the paper with your hands.

    You can glue the picture to the template either using PVA glue diluted with water, or special glue for decoupage. The main thing here is to act carefully, avoiding wrinkles in the picture. After this, the blank for the future watch should be dried and coated with acrylic varnish, after which the blank should be dried again. Repeat this pattern three times.

    This technique is described in more detail in the video at the end of the text.

    Choosing a style

    Before you start decoupaging the watch yourself, you should decide on the style of the future masterpiece. The following decoupage options are now most popular:

  • Provence;
  • vintage or antique;
  • "Hollywood".

First, you should choose the room in which you plan to hang your future masterpiece. For example, if this is a kitchen, then some kind of romantic sketch or a Hollywood-style clock would look inappropriate in it. On the contrary, a clock in Provence or vintage style will fit perfectly into the interior of most kitchens.

Perhaps the Provence style is one of the most common and understandable. If the Provence and Vintage styles are somewhat reminiscent of each other, then the Hollywood style is fundamentally different from them. So, it is characterized by the following nuances:

  • Using the following colors as primary colors: black, red, white, blue. Whatever colors you choose, they should, if possible, contrast with each other and stand out from the background.
  • Maximum shine, the use of all kinds of rhinestones is encouraged.
  • Using images of famous Hollywood actors, preferably from the Golden Era of Hollywood: Audrey Hepburn, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, etc. In this case, you will partially get a retro style.

All styles are suitable for beginners. You can familiarize yourself with these options by watching the video at the end of the text.

Features of dial decoupage

You can freely buy a ready-made dial in a store, but it’s much more interesting to make it yourself. So, the numbers on the clock can be made from almost the first objects that catch your eye. It all depends on your imagination and, of course, on the decoupage style of the watch.

Let's say you chose the Provence style. Then for the dial it would be appropriate to use wine bottle caps, dried lavender branches, and soap in the shape of small hearts. In addition, it is not necessary that there be numbers on the dial: just marking the divisions is enough.

Idea for a clock on a Pink Floyd record.
It is also convenient to make a clock on a plate because the center of the dial for the hands is precisely marked. However, it should be remembered that the round printed sticker in the center is difficult to “overlap” if it is white. It would be more practical to use a plate with a red sticker for the base.

If decoupage of an ordinary wall clock may seem boring, then we have saved another original option for you - decoupage of a clock on a vinyl record. The technique of such decoupage is not much different from that described above, but it has its own characteristics:

  • First you need to prepare the plate by priming it with white paint. Let it dry for a while.
  • To apply a picture, it is better to use special napkins for decoupage. We tear off the two bottom layers and apply only the top one to the plate. Using a flat synthetic brush, apply glue over the napkin. Let it dry, then cover our workpiece with a layer of varnish. After drying, apply varnish again.

Attention! You need to use special varnish and glue for decoupage.

  • We mark the dial. To do this, you can use wine corks, shells and any other items that you have enough imagination for.

Advice! Apply the paint with a dishwashing sponge.

  • We cover the watch with at least three layers of acrylic varnish.
  • We cover the sticker on the back of the plate with cardboard. We make a hole in the center and glue the clock mechanism. Attach the arrows and insert the batteries.

The original watch is ready!

Mk taken from the Masters Fair. I think it will be of interest to many people.

Good afternoon, dear craftswomen!

We present to your attention a master class on creating a designer watch with an imitation of a fresco.

For work we will need:

1. Base, in this case a ceramic plate

2. Image and set of numbers (we print on plain paper)

3. Washable acrylate paint

5. Matte acrylic varnish

6. Gold acrylic paint

7. PVA glue

8. Instant coffee and tea

9. Template for marking and marker

10. Various types of sponges, brush

So let's begin!

In order to drill the base, we use glass drills.

Degrease with alcohol or solvent, apply the first base coat. We apply the paint by stamping to make the surface rough.

As shown in the photo, at an angle, we tear off the excess background, coat it with glue and carefully glue our picture from the center to the edges, paying special attention to the places that fall on the curved part of the plate. If you get folds, it’s not even scary, they simulate cracks

Apply glue and leave until completely dry.

Now, we need to “inscribe” the picture. To do this, using a piece of loofah sponge, we apply paint using stamping movements, hiding the borders of the picture and once again texture the entire surface of the watch. Let's dry it.

For a dark edge, we need to dilute the main paint with the color.

We apply brown paint using a loofah stamp; note that only the very edges of the clock are tightly filled.

Tip: Before you start, try out the paint tone and stamping method on a sample.

Again, we wait for it to dry completely, but in the meantime we prepare the tint mixture.

We take the cheapest instant coffee and the cheapest tea bags + PVA + some water. I won’t tell you about the proportions, we do it “by eye” every time. First, brew a steep brew in a small amount of water, add coffee and constantly try the mixture on white paper, as soon as the color suits us, cool it and add the same amount of glue, mix. The mixture should be yellowish-brown, the color of old paper.

We will apply the tinting mixture with a foam sponge in the direction of the pattern; we should get stripes that imitate working with rough tools on plaster. Let's dry it.

We cover the entire surface of the watch with varnish in 2 layers.

Apply gold acrylic paint to the rim.

We put on the mechanism and VOILA!!!

Your finished, unique watch with an imitation of an old fresco.

There are many questions regarding the tint compound.

Before trying on the finished product, try on a sample. The material behaves very unpredictably. It’s better to add more coffee and top up the brew in portions, testing the color. Same thing with glue. I can’t recommend a specific manufacturer, take the one that is thicker. the ratio is approximately 50/50

Well, as a last resort, you can once again apply a thin layer of tint to the half-dried surface

then the stripes will be even more visible, which is what we need))

If you have any questions, ask! I'll be happy to answer

Best regards, Oksana

Many people have found their hobby among handcrafted techniques for creating decorative objects. Some people are good at painting pictures, others knit rugs or covers, and for some, the most beautiful thing is processing various interior items using the decoupage technique.

Decoupage technique, in essence, is the process of creating appliqué on any basis. That is, fragments of paper pictures are glued to the surface and fixed on it. Decoupage of a wall clock is a beautiful and at the same time practical activity.

Thanks to this technique, it is possible to update the appearance of old products or create your own new watch that will decorate your interior.

Features of watch design

Before starting work on decoupaging the clock, you should decide in which room the device will be placed. This must be done to make it easier to choose the appropriate pattern for the applique.

Decoupage pictures for watches that will decorate the dial can be chosen from:

  • ordinary three-layer paper napkins;
  • liked images downloaded from the Internet;
  • special decoupage cards or rice paper sheets purchased in specialized handmade stores;
  • favorite photos.

When it comes to images, choosing the right image should be guided by personal preferences and the location of the product.

So, for a children's room it is advisable to choose your favorite children's characters; for the kitchen, images of food and products are suitable. Most often I choose prints in the form of animals, landscapes, flowers, abstractions, inscriptions, etc.

Watch decoupage technique

Initially, we select dials for decoupage of watches. There may be several options here. The first is the simplest and most affordable - a ready-made piece of wood purchased in a store. The surface of such a dial is first sanded.

The second option is to use an old plastic music record as a base. It is convenient because it has an ideal circle shape, and in the middle there is already a hole where the mechanism will be attached. This type of surface is sanded and then treated with a degreaser.

The next step is to create the background. It can be created by simply painting the surface with acrylic paint of the desired color, or by gluing a napkin or rice cloth. If necessary, the surface can also be shaded with several colors and artificially aged.

The third stage is the direct gluing of the paper fragment with the picture to the surface. To do this, the desired piece is carefully pulled out of the canvas. It is important to tear out the fragment, since such edges are easier to mask.

The pieces are glued using a special decoupage adhesive composition or PVA glue diluted with water in a 1:1 ratio.

The main task of decoupaging a watch with your own hands is to prevent the formation of folds and air bubbles under the napkin. To remove and better straighten the fragment, flat fan brushes with synthetic bristles are used.

After the adhesive layer has dried, you can begin to consolidate the result by applying acrylic varnish to the entire surface of the dial. You need 3 such layers, and each one must dry well.

The final step will be to attach the clock mechanism to the center of the product. As a rule, store-bought blanks already contain all the necessary markings and parts of the watch design. Then you just need to carefully insert the mechanism into the hole and secure it.

If you have to do all the markings yourself, then you need to be as careful as possible. You can use various objects as numbers: cut numbers out of paper, paint and glue them, or paint them.

If the design allows, then large rhinestones and thematic figures are used as digital signs.

Often, one item decorated using the decoupage technique is complemented with a set of thematic accessories, for example, plates, cups, boxes, flowerpots and others, as in the photo of a decoupaged watch.

Anyone can handle the watch design process. In addition, there are many master classes on decoupage on the Internet that will introduce you to this technique and reveal the secrets of creating beautiful original products.

Photo of clock decoupage

Decoupage is a technique for decorating various objects. It is based on applying a cut-out pattern or picture to an object and then covering it with varnish. At its core, decoupage is a type of appliqué that all people have been familiar with since childhood. You can use both special and regular ones with an original pattern or ornament. Most often, lovers of creative pastime make decoupage of watches. They can be decorated in a wide variety of styles and colors. The finished product takes on the appearance of an original painting.

Preparing for work

Nowadays, this technique is not particularly popular. This is due to the opportunity to purchase a ready-made product with a wide variety of pictures and patterns. If you don’t want to spend extra money, you can decorate the watch yourself. Decoupage is done quite simply and without a lot of time and money.

Preparation for work should begin with choosing a pattern. Here you can use either a simple picture or an image designed in a certain style. Having decided on the design, you can begin selecting the necessary materials. Among them are the following:

  • multi-layer napkins with simple or complex patterns;
  • rice paper;
  • special pictures that can be easily found in any specialized store;
  • prepared personal photographs, which must be kept in water for a long time before use.

The work itself should begin with the purchase of a wooden base for the clock. It can be found in many stores specializing in handicrafts. Before use, the workpiece must be sanded until smooth. This will help attach the applique as evenly as possible. If the option with wood is not interesting to you, then you can take a plastic product as a basis. Before starting decoupage, it will need to be thoroughly wiped and degreased.

An ordinary plate can also be used as a blank for a watch. To do this, a hole is drilled in the middle for attaching the hands of future watches.

The picture or pattern for the watch must be carefully cut out using scissors. This part of the product will be attached to PVA or special glue for decoupage. This is usually the most difficult part of the job. The picture should lie flat and without a single unevenness or fold. In this regard, experienced craftsmen advise using rice paper, which is the easiest to stick to the workpiece.

Simple decoupage options

As a rule, everything is simple decoupage options are made on a ready-made basis for a clock with hands. The master just decides on the appearance, selects the dial and pastes a picture. You can use the following options:

  • finished image with numbers;
  • numbers made of wood or plastic;
  • separate dials;
  • writing with paint.

The simplest option is to use a ready-made picture with numbers. However, in this case, all the flaws that cannot be corrected will be more noticeable. If you use separate numbers or paint, they can cover up any unevenness. If you have a steady hand and a talent for writing numbers, you can draw the markings by hand. If there is even the slightest doubt about the success of this operation, then it is better to choose another option. Any crooked line can ruin your work and turn a beautiful thing into an unusable one.

Image selection

For your watch to turn into a unique designer piece, it needs a good design. The choice of image is as important as the application of numbers and any inaccuracy can lead to an undesirable outcome. Most often, the following images are used to decoupage watches:

  • animals;
  • landscapes;
  • plants;
  • flowers;
  • abstractions.

The choice of theme should be made based on the characteristics and style of the room in which the clock will be located.

In addition to drawings, switch mechanisms are decorated with a wide variety of things and objects: shells, plastic crafts, coffee beans, eggshells, foreign newspapers.

Using the decoupage technique you can not only decorate a new watch, but also transform an old one. The number of decoration options is in the millions and is limited only by your imagination.

The base can also be made with your own hands in the form of a circle with a hole for arrows. In addition to the standard round shape, you can use square or asymmetrical ones. The latter are gaining particular popularity and often decorate the walls of offices of banks and companies.

All these manipulations can be carried out not only for wall clocks, but also for table clocks. Any alarm clock can be easily given an original look by decorating it with vintage patterns or designs.

Selection of components

Nowadays, stores that specialize in selling handicraft goods offer a wide range of components for homemade watches. They are usually inexpensive and available to everyone. Among the watch parts for decoupage are the following:

  • clock mechanisms;
  • numbers;
  • stencil;
  • arrows;
  • wooden, glass and plastic bases.

All components can be purchased as a ready-made set or separately. It is important to think through and imagine the appearance of the finished product in advance in order to select the parts of the desired color and shape.

Original ideas

Recently, designs for watches containing romantic notes have become popular. These could be: flowers, angels, dolls, hearts. If you want to create a universal option that is suitable for any room, then you need to choose a still life or paintings by famous artists. For children's rooms, the best option would be a clock with images of cartoon characters, toys or animals.

Decoupage in Provence style

Provence - romantic style. It is as close as possible to the surrounding nature and rural life. Decoupage absorbs this spirit and helps evoke associations with French life at that time. Provence style can be distinguished thanks to several characteristic features:

  • the presence of a large number of plants that strengthen the connection with nature;
  • pastel shades;
  • pale and milky shades.

Provence goes well with any vintage decorative elements, which allows you to achieve romance and visual lightness.

Record clock

Whatever style you love, you will be impressed by the decoupage on the record. This retro version is very popular and already adorns the walls of many old music lovers. The plates themselves are an excellent base for a watch, as they have a round shape and a hole for the hands. To make a retro style accessory you will need:

It is not necessary to decorate the entire surface of the plate, but you can limit yourself to its individual segments. You can put a photo of your favorite band or singer on the record.

Gift item

Decoupage wall clocks will be an excellent original gift for any occasion. Depending on the celebration, you can make suitable themed products.

With the onset of winter, you can start making New Year's watches. Decoupage of such a product looks festive and adds a joyful atmosphere. The manufacturing technology is the same as in other cases, with the exception of some details:

  1. The frame should be decorated using spruce or pine branches. When the holidays are over, they can be removed without hindrance.
  2. Instead of a standard image, you can use New Year's landscapes, pictures of Santa Claus, a snowman, and deer.
  3. Instead of dial divisions, it is better to use snowflakes.

With a little imagination, you can come up with unusual options for other popular holidays, such as March 8, May 9, Christmas, Easter, etc.

Using the advice of experienced craftsmen, you can decoupage a wooden clock. Manufacturing master classes can be easily found on the Internet or in special books.

When making a watch using the decoupage technique, don't be afraid to experiment with images and style. This will help you fully unleash your creative abilities and please your family and friends with an interesting and original product.

Attention, TODAY only!

Some people paint pictures, assemble furniture themselves, take stunning photos, or knit rugs. And decoupage occupies a special place in this list. In fact, decoupage is a type of appliqué that is familiar to most people since kindergarten. Decoupage is done exclusively with napkins, both special and ordinary, but with interesting patterns. The structure is varnished, and then it becomes incredibly similar to a skillful painting.

Since this technique is only gaining momentum, the operating instructions are simply irreplaceable. The easiest way to decorate is a watch; this is where the path to professionalism begins. First you need to select a picture.

Which design to choose is up to the needlewoman to decide, but the material should be selected more meticulously:

  • Multilayer napkins with a pattern;
  • Rice paper or special pictures from craft stores;
  • You can take and print personal photos, but before starting work, you need to keep them in water for a long time.

The work begins with a wooden clock base, which can be purchased at almost any craft store. The base must be sanded so that the application lies as evenly as possible.

You can purchase plastic versions - they will need to be degreased. A plate can also be used as a base, you just need to drill a hole in the middle to attach the arrows. Then the background is made in any possible way. Most often, we are talking about dyeing, aging or gluing rice paper.

The picture needs to be cut out. It’s better to carefully tear it off with your hands rather than cut it with scissors - it’s easier to disguise the torn edge. The drawing is attached to PVA or specialized glue for decoupage. This is the most difficult moment; there should not be a single fold or unevenness. Therefore, for the first time, they usually choose drawings on rice paper - it will not allow this.

Next, the entire surface should dry. After this, it is covered with a layer of acrylic varnish and then dries. This pattern must be repeated three times. And after complete drying, the clock mechanism is attached to the back, hands and dial are attached (if needed). All you have to do is insert the battery and the watch is ready!

Simple decoupage of watch dials

If you plan to have a dial on your future wall clock, then you need to decide not only on the appearance.

Can choose:

  • Ready drawing with numbers;
  • Separate dials;
  • Numbers made of plastic or wood;
  • Apply paint.

Of course, it is most convenient to choose a drawing with markings already applied. True, in this situation, the defects will be much more noticeable, and it will no longer be possible to correct the drawing, as is the case with a separate dial. It’s very convenient if there is some kind of mistake, you can cover it up with a number or markings. The result will be a unique designer item.

You can glue ready-made numbers made of plastic or wood on top of the picture, after painting them in any color. True, the numbers will become convex, which does not always look aesthetically pleasing.

You can draw the markings yourself, you just need a steady hand so that the curved lines don’t spoil anything. Therefore, if you do not have the necessary skills, beginning needlewomen are advised to stick to ready-made options.

We make decoupage of watches with our own hands

It is very important to choose an interesting and beautiful design for your future watch.

Among the popular ones:

  • Landscapes;
  • Animals;
  • Flowers and plants;
  • Fair;
  • Abstract patterns.

In addition to the design, the watch is decorated with various objects: coffee beans, plastic butterflies, shells or wooden handles (the result is a watch in the form of a steering wheel), and eggshells are also used. Decoupage with newspapers is very popular, especially in foreign languages.

You can not only create from scratch, but also fantastically transform something that is already boring. This is especially true for old wooden clocks. They are often decorated with cats, plants and abstraction. And for the mantel clock, the ideas are inexhaustible - you can choose a design that imitates porcelain, marble or stone (so that the mantel clock matches the fireplace surround), and even decorate New Year’s options with tinsel. Interestingly, for decoupage they often choose drawings that contain imitation of vintage factory dials and other similar themes.

You can also make watch blanks yourself. If we take the simplest option, it will be a circle with a hole for arrows in the middle. But the shape of ordinary round watches is being replaced by the popularity of square and non-symmetrical figures.

It is very important to start from the place where the clock will hang. A clock that depicts, for example, a kettle, would not be very appropriate in the bedroom.

Don't forget about the table clock. An alarm clock can also be decorated using a similar technique. The place will have various vintage patterns and cityscapes (you can take the city of Paris as a basis). Particularly popular are watches in the shabby chic style, that is, aged, but still chic. You can buy an old watch and restore it, or you can artificially age something that you already have.

Blanks for decoupage of watches

Almost all components can be purchased in stores that sell handicraft items.

Blanks (for watch production) include:

  • Clock mechanisms;
  • Arrows;
  • Numbers;
  • Stencil;
  • Bases made of glass, wood and plastic.

Since decoupage is very popular, you can choose anything to suit your taste. You can select components separately, or purchase a ready-made set. The shape of an unusual base is relevant, for example, in the form of animals (most often decorated with cats) or plants. The design, as well as the type of arrows, may depend on the base, because beautiful pink arrows are unlikely to suit a fiery design.

Pictures for decoupage of watches

Of course, the most popular designs for watches have a touch of romance.

Most often you can find:

  • Flowers;
  • Dolls;
  • Angels;
  • Lettering about love;
  • Hearts.

Still lifes will also be appropriate: calm tones will allow you to hang a clock in almost any room and with any interior design style.

No less popular are reproductions of Renaissance paintings, as well as famous engravings and tapestries. Such watches are suitable for pompous palace style, because they emphasize the taste of the owners of the home.

And in children's rooms you can put a clock with your favorite cartoon characters, animals or toys (for example, Teddy Bear). Fortunately, the choice of designs is limited only by the imagination of the owners.

Decoupage of clocks in Provence style

It is worth remembering that romantic Provence is part of the country style. It is very close to nature and simple rural life. Decoupage transfers this spirit to itself - associations immediately arise with lavender fields and an old French village.

Distinctive features of this style:

  • Pastel shades;
  • As if the color had been bleached by the sun;
  • Plant elements that emphasize the connection with nature.

In general, decoupage in the Provence style suggests the presence of milky shades in combination with pastel colors. Most often these are shades of blue, purple and pink.

Provence is perfectly combined with vintage elements, which will make the watch visually light and incredibly romantic. A set of kitchen items made in the same technique with the same pattern, for example, mugs, clocks and frying pans, looks especially impressive. Provence and vintage cuisine will make it much cozier and more comfortable.

But in the hallway, Provence style can be present not only in the clock. The following set would be appropriate: a clock, a calendar and a mirror. All this can be decorated with original frames with a floral print. A pendulum clock decorated with lavender flowers is also very suitable. Such a “house” with a cuckoo will enliven and decorate the interior.

Retro decoupage: record clock

A special place is occupied by retro watches made from old vinyl records. They are a very good basis for a watch, and will certainly appeal to all lovers of retro and music.

In order to make such an accessory, you will need:

  • The record itself (you can take a non-working one);
  • Printouts with pictures;
  • Glue (PVA or specially for decoupage);
  • Acrylic paint, preferably several colors;
  • Acrylic lacquer;
  • Scissors;
  • Various brushes;
  • Complete clock mechanism (that is, with hands);
  • Various small details or numbers.

The good thing about a vinyl record is that it has a hole in the middle, so you don't have to make another one. It is not at all necessary to completely decorate the record - such a watch, in which the mechanism is simply inserted, will look incredible. You can add an image of your favorite singer.

In general, the work process is no different. In the same way, the surface is carefully degreased and, if necessary, painted. Then, using glue, the pattern is attached as neatly and evenly as possible. Interestingly, you can add convex details, for example, craquelure or even lace. Everything must dry, and then it is varnished, and the procedure is repeated, in total, three times.

By the way, you can not only leave the watch as it is, but also cover it with a special watch glass - you can find it in the store. True, this applies mainly to standard watch forms.

Master class on decoupage of watches (video)

Large rhinestones instead of numbers or elements that are related to music (for example, notes) will look great on a vinyl watch. You can look at such watches in large stores like Ikea. It is very important to note that vinyl records most often have a rather large size, so if you want to paint over the record completely, then you need to choose a large and clear design. Several small ones in a similar style and in approximately the same color scheme will also be suitable. Good luck and creative success!
