Replacing locks on a metal door: urgent change of cylinder. Replacing a lock on a metal entrance door with your own hands How to change the lock cylinder of a metal door

We use the lock on the door every day; it is subject to intensive use and more often than other hardware components it breaks down. Trying to protect their apartment, the owners are faced with the need to replace the old lock on the iron door.

One of the most important reasons why an apartment owner is going to change the lock is the loss of the key. If there is no duplicate or it is suspected that the keys have been stolen, everyone wants to secure their home and replace the lock on the front door as quickly as possible.

It can also be caused by the lock jamming, breaking, or finding a foreign object inside. Before you run to the store for a new lock, make sure there is no other way to solve your problem.

Most often it turns out that you can get and replace the lock cylinder and the need to buy a new one will disappear by itself.

You can buy and replace the lock cylinder yourself or invite a door repairman.

To avoid breakdowns in the future, you need to follow these tips:

  • Correctly insert the key into the lock and do not use force if you cannot insert it into the hole;
  • Turn the key only the number of times necessary to open and close;
  • Do not insert foreign objects or keys from other locks into the lock;
  • Do not insert keys from both sides at the same time;
  • Lubricate the lock periodically;
  • Do not pull out the key until it reaches the stop.

By following these simple rules, you may never be faced with the need to replace the lock on a steel entrance door in your own apartment.

Replacing locks on a metal door: types of door locks

In order to understand how to change a lock, you first need to figure out what type it is.

Most often, cylinder and lever locks are used on metal doors. Less common are rack, disk, crossbar and cruciform.

You can determine which lock it is by taking a closer look at the keys.

How to determine the type of lock based on the shape of the key:

  • Cylinder locks have a flat key with notches on it. These locks have a cylinder that can be removed for replacement.
  • Lever locks have a more complex system. The keys for such locks have a long shaft with plates and slots at the end.
  • Rack and pinion locks with flat keys with channel recesses in it.
  • Disc locks are opened with short semicircular keys, they have serifs on one side.
  • Deadbolt locks have long, straight keys with oblique slots on them.
  • Cross-shaped locks are so named because the keys to them look like a Phillips-head screwdriver.

It is also worth mentioning that locks differ in the type of their attachment to the door.

Types of locks:

  • Padlocks do not attach to the door. There will be no problems replacing such a lock. They are mainly used to protect a garage, shed or barn.
  • Overhead locks do not violate the integrity of the door. They are fastened from the inside with bolts or self-tapping screws.
  • Mortise locks are located inside the door. The fasteners are located at the end.

Before you run to the store to buy a new lock, try lubricating it first.

Is it possible to change the lock on a metal door yourself?

Replacing a lock on an iron door yourself is more difficult than on a regular wooden one. The modern market for entrance doors is teeming with low-quality Chinese counterfeits that are made of thin metal. It is possible to change the lock on such a Chinese door, but sometimes it is easier to buy a better quality door than to go through the hassle of dismantling and installing a new lock.

It is easier to remove the lever lock a little due to the fact that the cylinder does not interfere with removing the lock itself from the door.

Progress:

  1. Unscrew the bolt on one of the handles with a hex key;
  2. Remove the side trims along with the handles;
  3. Unscrew the outermost bottom and top bolts in the end plate.

Before you begin removing the old lever lock, make sure the door is open and the lock is in the open position.

It is advisable to buy a new lock from the door manufacturer. Locks purchased at the market or in a store, although they have a guarantee, may not be suitable for your type of entrance door.

When removing the lock, the key to the lock should not be inside, it should be removed.

The lock installation procedure is reversed. First, install the new lock, secure it with bolts and put on the covers with handles.

Replacing the lock core in a metal door with your own hands

If your door has a cylinder lock, you may not have to replace the entire lock. You can limit yourself to replacing the lock core.

To remove the lock cylinder, you need to:

  1. Take measurements of the door (its thickness) and the dimensions of the lock cylinder - width;
  2. Unscrew the bolt that secures the lock at the end of the door;
  3. Turn the key to the “Open” position and squeeze the core out;
  4. With this part, you can choose a suitable cylinder in a hardware store, or you can take the dimensions of the cylinder - diameter, length, width;
  5. Insert the new cylinder into the lock and tighten the required bolt at the end of the door.

If the key is stuck in the door, just use a drill and drill out the inside from the opposite side.

When purchasing a new core, not only its size is important, but also its color and type. The cylinder may have two holes for a key or a connector on one side and a locking pin on the other.

It doesn’t matter which larva you choose, the main thing is don’t try to save money on your purchase. Cheap Chinese parts for entrance doors do not provide a complete guarantee of protection against burglary.

Replace the lock on a metal door: how to open a jammed door

There are situations in life when the owner himself is faced with the need to enter his apartment without a key, that is, to break into it. You can call a specialist, but it will take some time.

Loss or theft of keys, jamming of the lock from the outside - no one is immune from such problems and in such a situation you need to act quickly.

The lock can be broken using simple items that you can easily borrow from your neighbors.

How to open a steel door lock:

  1. Hairpin. A very effective method of opening a door lock, often shown in films. However, not all types of locks can be picked using a hairpin. The hairpin needs to be broken into two parts or two pieces of wire taken. Insert one part inside the lock. Second, push the inner pins apart and turn the lock with the first part.
  2. If the door has a lever lock, you need to pull the door as far as possible and push the pins apart with a wire inserted inside. This lock is very difficult to pick, so don't be surprised if it doesn't work.
  3. The cross-shaped lock can be opened using a regular screwdriver. To do this, you need to drill an inlet hole above the keyhole, insert a screwdriver and try to turn the mechanism.

Of course, these methods do not guarantee 100% opening of the door. It is better to seek help from specialists or try to pick up the key to the lock from memory at a hardware store.

How to remove a lock from a metal door (video)

To protect your apartment, you need to choose a good, high-quality lock. After installing a new lock on a steel door, you must check its functionality. First you need to turn the lock with the door open, then with the door closed. The new mechanism should work clearly and easily.

Even the most reliable lock can fail for various reasons. Often this is simple wear and tear of any moving parts. The door lock may become unusable due to foreign particles, dust or moisture getting into it. Ultimately, a break-in attempt can result in the front door lock being damaged. And if the door manufacturer installed a default lock without a replaceable code block, then replacement may be required in case of simple loss of keys.

Those who keep up with the times may simply want to replace the outdated lock in their apartment and install a new one with a more advanced security mechanism. In any case, there is no need to call specialists. If you have a basic tool and know the basic nuances of how to change a lock on a metal door, this procedure can in most cases be easily performed on your own.

Selection of door lock

For modern metal doors, overhead and mortise locks are used. Invoices are used quite rarely and replacing them does not cause any particular difficulties - you just need to remove the old lock and install a similar one in its place.

The most common types of mortgage locks in terms of security and performance characteristics are:

To simplify the process of replacing a door lock in an apartment, you can choose a similar one based on the principle of operation. It is necessary to take into account the main dimensions of the lock, namely:

  • body height and thickness
  • lock cutout depth
  • position of the counter bracket under the crossbars
  • keyhole position

If you have a system of vertical crossbars or when using advanced security class systems with embedded locks, it will most likely not be possible to make a replacement without dismantling and disassembling the door yourself. The best option before replacing would be to first consult with the door manufacturer.

Locks of this type have a common structure. The main elements are:

  • protective cover panel
  • cylinder, or as it is also called “larva”
  • lock body with mechanism
  • door knob

If you lose your keys, there is no need to change the entire lock in your apartment. You can replace the cylinder and the lock will be unlocked with a new set of keys. It is better to first insert the key into the lock from the inside, unscrew the locking screw at the end of the door and pull out the cylinder by the key flap.

When choosing a new cylinder, it is best to take the old one with you as a sample to avoid buying the wrong part. It should be taken into account that the cylinders themselves differ in the degree of protection. Various cylinders for the lock in the apartment protect against burglary with a master key, selection of keys, knocking out and other things. Therefore, when choosing a new cylinder to replace it in the lock on the front door, you should rely on your needs.

Installing a new cylinder is done in the reverse order. Before finally tightening the fixing screw, make sure that the lock unlocks without unnecessary effort or extraneous sounds. Sometimes minor adjustments to the position of the cylinder are required.

Replacing the lock body

If you need to replace the entire cylinder lock mechanism, you must first push all the bolts into the lock and open it. Then, you should remove the cylinder as described above, remove the door handle, unscrew the screws and remove the protective cover. Then unscrew the fixing screws, pry and pull out the lock body itself. Installing a new lock is carried out in the reverse order.

Replacing a lever-type lock

One regularity should be taken into account here - imported systems provide for the replacement of the code part and the subsequent recoding of the installed secret key to a new set of keys. In the case of a domestic manufacturer, there is no other option but to change the door lock completely.

To replace the lever lock on the front door, you need to push in all the bolts, in other words, simply open the lock. The key from the lever lock must be removed. After this, the door handle, all latches and armor plate (if present) are removed. In most cases, decorative elements on the outside and inside of an iron door do not need to be removed when replacing the lock.

After this, you need to unscrew the screws securing the lock. Depending on the design of the lock, there are 2 or 4 of them. Then you can pry and pull out the old one and replace the lock in the door with a similar one.

Replacing a disc lock

The secret part of this lock also has the shape of a cylinder, but instead of spring-loaded pins, there is a set of cylinders inside. As in the case of a lever lock, when determining the need to replace the front door lock itself, the following factors must be taken into account:

  • In domestic mechanisms, if breakdowns occur, it is necessary to completely change the front door lock. This is due to the fact that it is almost impossible to find a high-quality replacement for the secret cylinder.
  • In imported mechanisms, you can replace the secret part without changing the entire lock.

Before starting to dismantle the old lock, it is necessary to push in all the bolts, that is, bring the lock to the open position. The next step is to remove the secret part. Its fastening is sometimes somewhat more complicated than in cylindrical type locks; the fixing screw can act on the spacer elements or the pin system. After this, the door handles and protective linings are removed. And then the fastening screws of the lock itself are unscrewed at the end of the front door, after which the lock can be pryed and pulled out. To install a new lock on the front door yourself, you need to do all the above steps in reverse order.

In any case, when choosing a new lock to install on the front door of an apartment, you should take into account that security is ensured not only by the complexity of the code part, but also by the overall strength of the structure and the presence of additional means of protection against bumping and drilling. Based on the above factors, preference when purchasing a replacement lock on the front door should be given to imported devices.

A lock may need to be replaced for various reasons. Most often this, of course, is its breakdown. Locks are also changed when they no longer satisfy the owner. For example, the old system is unreliable and easy to hack. If the keys are lost, a new design is also installed (although it is easier to order a duplicate). In the article we will talk about how to change the door lock in an apartment yourself, how to change the tongue and cylinder.

Types of locks

There are locks:

  • mounted;
  • mortise;
  • invoices.

Mortise locks are often installed on wooden doors. However, today they are also installed in steel structures.

Mortise locks do not provide the proper level of security.

Padlocks and rim locks are the most common. They are easy to remove and replace.

Locks differ not only in the installation method, but also in design. Before changing the door lock, you need to choose one that will completely suit the owner.

  1. Cylinder lock. A lock of this type does not need to be completely changed if it satisfies the owner with its quality. Usually, in the event of a breakdown, it is enough to replace the core of the structure, the so-called larva. It is this that contains the entire mechanism. The cylinder is the weak point of the cylinder lock. If you drill it out, the door will give way without difficulty.
  2. Level locks. Such systems are installed only in one way - by insertion. For a non-professional, inserting such a unit is problematic. To do this, you will have to figure out how to fit the lock into the door without damaging the door. If the blade is steel, then the lever lock can be removed and replaced with a similar one. Some companies produce locks of this type that require recoding. There is no need to change the lock itself, only the key to it will be changed.
  3. Disc lock. These systems are divided into automatic and semi-automatic locks. They also contain a larva. Most often, when they break down, such locks are replaced, although if the system is quite expensive, then you can get by with replacing the core.

How to embed

Before you install a door lock, you need to select it. The easiest way to work is with a cylindrical one.

  1. In order to embed the lock into the door leaf, you first need to set a convenient height for the hole.
  2. Now you need to attach a new lock to the canvas and make markings. A groove will be drilled at the marking site. The tools you will need are a drill, a chisel and a chisel.
  3. First, the work of drilling the groove is done with a drill with a drill having a slightly smaller diameter than the width of the groove.
  4. Next, the groove is refined with a chisel and chisel.
  5. Then you need to mark the hole where the well will be drilled.
  6. The holes for the screws are drilled last.
  7. For the “secret” you also need to drill a groove. It is necessary to establish its dimensions and make markings.
  8. To determine how far the latch fits into the groove, you need to lubricate it with a dye and close the lock.

Before installation, you need to lubricate the moving elements of the lock. However, it is better not to touch the internal mechanism of the larva. If necessary, it is better to treat it with graphite. All other parts are treated with grease.

After installation, only decorative and cosmetic work remains.

How to choose

When choosing a door lock, you need to consider where it will be placed. If we are talking about an entrance door in a multi-storey building, then a cylinder lock is also suitable. Of course, it can be drilled out, but few robbers will make noise and attract attention. Modern iron doors are usually equipped with lever locks.

You need to put something more durable in your cottage or country house. It is better if there is not one castle, but at least two.

The most durable today are the so-called smartlocks - “smart locks”. Such systems operate on batteries. Depending on the cost, they can be equipped with password entry buttons, fingerprint or retina scanners. When the battery charge runs out completely, they operate using a regular key.

The cost of these systems is quite high. They are used in the most extreme cases. According to the principle of operation, they can be compared with intercoms, which are found in almost every entrance today.

Video

In general terms, replacing a door lock is shown in the following video:

The situation when there is a need to change the lock on a metal door does not happen often, but requires an immediate solution.

After all, protecting your home and property is a function not only of the front door, but also of the lock.

Therefore, many homeowners do not want to trust such an important matter as replacing a lock to strangers.

Replacing the lock is necessary if:

  • the door was replaced with a new one;
  • the lock is out of order;
  • weak, unreliable lock;
  • keys were stolen;
  • the front door was broken into;
  • there is damage to the mechanism.

Changing the lock on a metal door yourself is not too difficult.

But in order to master the process yourself, you first need to prepare theoretically, watch a suitable video, get acquainted with the device and understand the essence of the process of replacing it.

The specifics of replacing a lock on an iron door are determined by the design of the lock itself.

Therefore, you first need to determine its type.

There are 3 types of locks:

  1. Cylinder - the core of this type of lock is cylindrical in shape and equipped with a special secret mechanism. The lock includes a cylinder (cylinder), an armored steel plate and a handle. Operating principle - when the key is turned, the pins with which the mechanism is equipped fall into special recesses;
  2. Disc - the secret element of the disc mechanism is a cylinder, inside of which there is a set of freely rotating discs. The key for the disc lock has a semicircular cross-section. This type of lock can be opened only if the cutouts on the key match the shape and size of the disk ones. If you use another key, the mechanism will block the rotation of the disks;
  3. Level - the secret element of this type of locks are special plates called levelers. Each of the plates has special figured cutouts. The lever lock opens only when the position of the key teeth coincides with the position of the plates.

Features of replacing cylinder locks on a metal door

The cylinder type system is considered the most convenient in terms of replacement; it is enough to change only the cylinder, and the main mechanism remains the same.

In addition, the cylinder lock is reliable because the encryption elements filling its cylinder cannot be opened with a master key.

There are several options for eliminating a breakdown in a cylinder lock. If the handle of a metal entrance door is broken, then only the handle needs to be replaced.

If the key is broken or lost, the lock cylinder is replaced.

To change the cylinder, you can take the following steps:

  • Unscrew the locking screw located at the end;
  • From the side of the room, insert the key into the hole and completely close the lock;
  • Then turn the key a little and use it to pull out the cylinder. If there is no key, you can use a drill;
  • Now you need to buy a new cylinder, similar in size. Of particular importance is
  • Distance from the pawl to the outer edge of the larva;
  • The new cylinder is inserted from the inside, after which it is again secured with a locking screw.

In some cases, it is not enough to replace only the larva.

If the lock mechanism is worn out or damaged, the entire lock body must be replaced.

To do this you need:

  • Open the lock completely;
  • Remove the cylinder-cylinder in the same way as described above;
  • Remove the door handles, armored lining, and latches;
  • Unscrew all the end screws (usually there are 4 of them);
  • Pull out the mechanism. To install a new entrance lock, perform the steps in the reverse order.

The work must be done slowly and with concentration. In a hurry or through carelessness, you can damage not only the cylinder, but also the entire mechanism of the locking system.

And then you will have to spend much more time and effort on repairing it.

Features of replacing lever locks in a metal door

Level locks are among the most reliable in terms of the level of security of the mechanism.

Experts believe that hacking the lever system is very difficult, almost impossible, provided there are a large number of plates with special teeth.

But there are also disadvantages. For example, the key that opens the plate system is large, which is not always convenient.

In addition, the lever keyhole of a metal door is equipped with a hole that is too large, allowing air and sounds to pass through.

Repairing levers is also fraught with difficulties. First of all, because even with minor malfunctions, the entire mechanism needs to be changed completely.

The locking elements work in complete conjunction with the plates, so partial repair of the lock is out of the question.

Foreign manufacturers are trying to find a solution to this problem.

Lever locks have already appeared on the market, the mechanism of which can be recoded when replacing the key.

Whereas domestic lever locks cannot be recoded, and if the key is lost, they require a complete replacement of the mechanism.

This complicated procedure can only be avoided if the damage is minor, for example, the handle of a metal entrance door has broken off.

To correct the situation, the handle must be replaced and you can continue to use the lock.

Stages of installing a new lever lock on a metal door

Before installing a new lock, you must remove the old one.

For this:

  • We open the metal door and then open the lever lock completely, that is, the bolts should be pushed in as far as possible;
  • Remove the key from the keyhole;
  • We dismantle the door handles, armored lining and deadbolt;
  • Unscrew the screws at the end of the locking system;
  • We gradually remove the entire mechanism. For convenience, the lock is hooked under the end plate;
  • We buy a new lever lock and install it, performing all the steps in reverse order. For better operation, experts recommend choosing a lock of the same design or at least from the same manufacturer.

Replacing a metal door latch is not difficult, but it is time consuming and requires diligence.

Features of replacing a metal door disc lock

Disc locking systems are distinguished by a high degree of protection not only against burglary using a master key, but also against forceful burglary using drilling.

In addition, disc locks are less likely to become clogged with dust, are protected from moisture penetration, are not afraid of low temperatures and have a long service life.

Replacing a disk lock is not difficult, especially if the design is made by a foreign manufacturer.

The problem with domestic disc-type locking systems is that their repair is not always feasible.

Therefore, if problems arise in the operation of a domestic lock, it is recommended to replace it with a new lock.

If the disk lock is made by foreign manufacturers, then if it breaks, it makes sense to find the cause and eliminate it.

It is quite possible that for the disc lock to work properly, it will be enough to replace its cylinder.

If the disc lock is difficult to open, then the reason may be a lack of lubrication in the internal mechanism.

If the lubricant does not help, then it needs to be removed for diagnostics. To do this, simply unscrew the end screw and then use a key to remove the rim lock.

Then unscrew 2 more screws that secure the disk and remove it.

After purchasing a new disk of the same size, it is installed in the lock, performing all the steps in the reverse order.

As practice shows, you can avoid problems with locking systems and at the same time ensure reliable protection of your home if you do not save on purchasing high-quality mechanisms.

A high-quality lock does not guarantee the complete absence of breakdowns, but it will make them a rare and easily solvable occurrence.

Homeowners' peace of mind and property protection depend entirely on locks on their front doors. But no matter how durable and reliable the locking devices are, they have to be changed periodically. Entrusting such important work to strangers is not always wise. Repairing or replacing the front door lock yourself is not such a difficult task. The main thing is to know the type of lock, its design features and the procedure for performing the work.

All locks on the front door, according to the principle of operation of the locking mechanism, are divided into lever and cylindrical. Their type can be easily determined by the appearance of the keyhole and key. Thus, lever locks have an oblong, but through keyhole, which is clearly visible in the photo.

The key is long. At the end of the round rod there are soldered (welded) bits, with the help of which the door opens/closes (see photo).

A cylinder lock has a small keyhole. It doesn't have a through hole either. The classic version of the keyhole is shown in the photo.

The keys are small. May have different shapes. The photo under numbers 1 and 2 shows variants of classic keys with single-row tongues for pins (pins). Under the 3rd position there is a cross-shaped key, 4 - a half-disc key, 5 - a punched card key (the most complex, with counterpins).

Each type of lock has its own repair or replacement technology. In this work, we will look at how to repair or change the lock on a cylinder-type metal entrance door.

Features of cylinder locks

Cylinder-type locks appeared in the 19th century in England. Hence the second name of the castle - “English”. The reliability of the secret mechanism and the ease of repair (replacement) have made this locking device so popular that it is almost impossible to find a place where it cannot be found.

The English castle is everywhere: in entrance and interior doors in private houses and apartments, offices, public buildings, etc. It can be mortise - installed in a specially cut (wooden door) or prepared (iron door) space in the door leaf (see photo), or overhead (they also have another name - “boxed”, because of the shape) - overlapped directly on the door leaf, sometimes in a special groove. They are mainly installed in addition to mortise locks to enhance security.

A feature of English locks is their strict standardization - the core (cylinder) is produced with a diameter of 1.7 cm and a height of 3.3 cm (the length can be any). Lock bodies can have a variety of shapes and sizes, but all manufacturers (Abloy, Mul-T-Lock, Apecs, KALE, etc.), following the DIN standard, unify them to the specified core size.

The exceptions are old Soviet and Finnish-made locks and some types of products from Chinese companies (RIM standard). Thanks to this approach, cylinders from different manufacturers are interchangeable, which allows the repair of English locks to be reduced to a simple replacement of the front door cylinder.

Reasons for replacing the larva

Replacing the lock cylinder of the entrance door in an apartment is carried out when:

  • the apartment or house has changed owners (the previous owners may have had duplicate keys);
  • tenants change (the reason is the same);
  • the simplest locks from the developer were installed, which does not meet the needs of the homeowners;
  • several keys are lost or stolen (intruders can install a lock that they match);
  • signs of taking impressions were found;
  • several thefts were committed at the entrance;
  • an attempted burglary was detected (the lock was partially damaged or the neighbors scared off the burglar);
  • signs of wear of the lock mechanism are recorded: the key turns poorly. It often jams when turning 180 o. To close or open the lock, you have to repeat attempts by shaking the key in the hole; the key rotates, but idle; Difficulties arise when trying to pull the key out of the keyhole - the move can only be made in an intermediate position; Extraneous sounds appear (crunching, creaking, clanging) when the key is inserted into the hole and the lock is turned.

Possible problems with the mechanics of the cylinder can be determined by the condition of the key: the edges have been erased or their height has changed downward.

For information: Chinese and Turkish-made larvae have a service life of no more than 5 years, European ones - 7-10 years.

Often it is not the secret mechanism itself that fails, but the rotary cam that moves the bolts - this is the most vulnerable element in an English castle.

How to choose a replacement

When buying a new larva, you need to pay attention to the following parameters:

  • degree of reliability (secrecy) of the cylinder (for example, you can easily break a locking device and open a door with a cross-shaped core in the lock using a Phillips screwdriver, and a disc lock can be opened in 5 minutes by beginners who have only a theoretical understanding of the method of breaking and in 2 minutes by professional “burglars” ) - today, locks with a punched card key are the most protected from unauthorized opening;
  • the length of the core must correspond to the thickness of the doors. A discrepancy of 3 mm is allowed. In this case, the cylinder on the outside should be flush with the door or buried in it, but not protrude (you can open such a lock in a couple of seconds by hitting the core of the lock hard with a hammer or any heavy object);
  • the mounting hole for the new cylinder should be in the same place as the old one;
  • type of mechanism that moves the crossbars - a cam or gear;
  • type of cylinder: “key-key” (opened from the outside and inside with a key) or “key-turner” (the apartment has a rotary handle with which the lock opens and closes).

When going to the store, you can take the old larva with you and buy according to the sample (at this time someone must remain in the apartment or the front door is locked with one lock). If this is not possible, then you can take measurements from the larva in two ways:

  • use a ruler or tape measure to measure the main dimensions (total length and distance from the edge of the cylinder to the mounting bolt);
  • Draw the contours of the core on paper, marking the mounting hole.

For information: on sale you can most often find cores with lengths of 6, 7, 8, and 9 cm. In this case, the thread for the mounting bolt can be located anywhere - selection is necessary.

Another point worth paying attention to is the color of the larva. It should fit harmoniously into the color of the doors and not stand out.

Attention: as noted above, lock cylinders are manufactured according to the DIN standard. Therefore, there is no need to measure the diameter of the larva and write down the name of the manufacturer, as advised on most Internet resources. They are all interchangeable.

How to remove an old grub

The owner of the premises can easily change the cylinder as planned: just unscrew the fastening bolt (the nuances of replacement are below). But if an emergency occurs (the lock is jammed while the door is closed), it can be difficult to repair the lock (remove the old cylinder) yourself. The following methods can help in this situation:

  • reaming;
  • breaking out;
  • knocking out;
  • bumping.

Reaming. Drilling a channel in the cylinder along the pins allows you to quickly and humanely (in the sense of preserving the lock) first open the door and then remove the cylinder from the lock. You can read how to do this professionally in the material “”.

Breaking out. The breaking method keeps the door safe and sound, but the lock will have to be changed. The essence of the method is to turn the core with a gas (adjustable) wrench. To do this, a steel plate is driven into the keyhole, which is turned along with the secret, breaking everything inside. After this, the larva is pulled out, and the door is opened with the help of a hook.

Knocking out. A heavy hammer and chisel or a simple 24-27 bolt will help to knock out the larva. As with breaking out, the lock will have to be replaced. It is used in extreme cases, as there is a possibility of damaging the door leaf.

The principle of knocking out is simple: a chisel or bolt is placed on the lock (head up) and with strong blows of the hammer the larva is knocked out into the apartment, after which it will not be difficult to open the door. The only thing that needs to be controlled is that the chisel or bolt does not slip onto the door leaf. Otherwise, you will have to change the door itself.

Bumping. Bumping in itself does not make it possible to remove the cylinder from the lock or replace door locks in a metal door. It can be used to open a lock if the keys are lost, followed by replacing the core. By the way, it preserves the functionality of the larva. If you have spare keys and are confident that the lost key will not be used by attackers, you don’t have to change the secret.

Bumping is a kind of master key, only industrially produced. It looks like a classic English castle key. It's easy to use, but requires patience. To open a door, a master key is inserted into the keyhole and then struck. Kinetic energy is transferred to the pins and they are thrown up in a chaotic manner. The burglar's task is to seize the moment and turn the key, opening the lock.

Required tools and materials

To routinely replace the cylinder, you need a minimum set of tools: a Phillips screwdriver (PH2) or a screwdriver with a Phillips head, plus a ruler (tape measure) and the cylinder itself. If the lock is jammed or the key is broken, to change the core you will additionally need:

  • electric drill with a set of drills (0.5, 1.2 and 3.6 mm);
  • pliers;
  • screwdriver with a thin and narrow slot;
  • small crowbar or crowbar;

Let us immediately note that the instructions for replacing the cylinder lock cylinder are word for word suitable for any doors (Elbor, Torex, Guardian, etc.). Therefore, there is no need to look for anything additional to what will be shown and described below. We will teach our lesson using photographs.

Step 1. The lock is brought into the open position - the bolts must be inside the lock body. The door opens. At its end, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screw securing the cylinder.

Step 2. The key is inserted into the keyhole and turned 10-15 o (the cam is hidden inside the cylinder) so as not to interfere with its movement through the lock body. After this, the key is pulled towards itself or the cylinder is pressed from the back until it completely pops out of the door.

The described steps are only possible if the lower part of the cylinder is not covered with a rosette or slats, with a key-key combination. You cannot use this technology with the “key-spinner” larva either. In this situation, you need to remove the interference and then perform the steps described above (step 1 and 2).

“Key-spinner” larva

To release the cylinder with a rotating tongue instead of a key, it is necessary to remove the decorative plate on the inside of the doors. To do this, use a screwdriver to unscrew 4 screws at the corners of the lining.

Socket

The socket is twisted off from the keyhole (top red arrow in the photo), then the self-tapping screw with the sawn-off head is unscrewed (see next photo).

After freeing the cylinder from the lining, it is removed from the lock body.

Overlay

The trim is attached to the door with two self-tapping screws, bottom and top. They must be unscrewed and removed along with the handle, and then proceed to dismantling the cylinder.

Assembly is carried out in reverse order. But here a big difficulty arises when tightening the mounting screw - it is difficult to get into the mounting hole. There are no special tips or technologies - just patience.

Replacing the cylinder lock

Replacing the security lock in a rim lock proceeds according to the following algorithm:

  • the lock is removed from the door leaf. To do this, use a hexagon (imbus key) to unscrew 4 screws in the corners of the body and two screws at the end of the door;
  • unscrew the back cover of the lock (you need to remove 4 screws);
  • The larva is released - 2 screws are unscrewed.

Assembly is carried out in reverse order.

Checking the functionality of the lock

After installing the cylinder, the operation of the lock is checked with the doors open and closed. When turning the key there should be no extraneous noise, the movement of the crossbars should be soft, and there should be no backlash anywhere.

If something is wrong, the screw holding the cylinder is unscrewed and installed again (the cause of the problems lies in the imperceptible distortion of the secret mechanism when fastening it with a fixing screw).

Conclusion

The planned replacement of a cylinder lock cylinder can be done by anyone who has ever held a screwdriver in their hand. Finding the screws and self-tapping screws that hold the lining and core of the lock is easy. Difficulties arise when the keys are lost or the locking mechanism is jammed. But even in this case, you can do it on your own.
