A simple bird drinker made from scrap materials. A new country masterpiece - a do-it-yourself birdbath Video master class: bottle feeder

On a personal summer cottage, the presence of birds, be it sparrows and titmice and important bullfinches, is important. In the summer, these feathered orderlies peck at all the beetles and pests that spoil the tender seedlings, and in the winter they simply delight the soul with their cheerful chirping. In order to create the necessary conditions for them to live a well-fed life and to accustom a large family of birds to their area, you can make a feeder into which bread crumbs and cereal grains are poured. The feeder must be supplemented with a special drinker, which will allow the birds not to look for a pond, but to drink clean water and clean their feathers immediately after “lunch.”

Two in one, or what is a feeder-drinker

Most often, a bird feeder/drinker is a small plastic box without a lid with fastenings on the side. Food is poured into it as needed or water is poured. A huge disadvantage of this option is the need to combine two functions. Of course, you can purchase two feeders and drinkers at once and fill them with food and water separately. But this is more of a home feeding method for birds that are kept in cages, on the walls of which it is convenient to attach these containers. In addition, they are not equipped with a “roof” and unplanned precipitation can ruin all the food. For free birds, it is better to choose a separate drinker (there are quite a few of them sold in specialized stores) or make it yourself.

How to make a birdbath

The simplest automatic bird drinker can be made in just 20 minutes and is a rather original design made from plastic bottles. To make it, you will need two bottles, one with a capacity of five liters (they sell drinking water in any supermarket), and the second with a capacity of two liters.

Step 1. Trim the top edge of a five-liter bottle so that it forms a shallow bowl with a stopper at the bottom. It is enough if its depth is about 10cm.

Step 2. Unscrew the plugs of both containers and connect them to each other using a bolt. The plugs have different diameters and you need to insert the small one into the larger one and secure them tightly. The threads on the lids should be on one side.

Step 3. Make a small hole (no more than 1cm) in a two-liter bottle at a height not exceeding the depth of a large eggplant bowl. Since we made the bowl about 10cm high, a hole in the small one can be made 5-7cm from the neck.

Step 4. Fill the bottle with water and screw it to the bowl using double caps.

Now, after turning this structure upside down, water from the hole made in the small bottle will flow into the bowl. Moreover, it will be collected exactly at the level at which the hole was made. As the birds evaporate and splash liquid from the bowl, the water will automatically fill at this level. This is the result of this original do-it-yourself bird drinker.

Nipple bird drinkers

Nipple bird drinkers are a completely different system for watering birds. First of all, it should immediately be noted that these drinkers are sold in abundance in specialized stores, and their prices are extremely low. But for homemade lovers, here too there is an opportunity to make it yourself.

So, the design of the nipple drinker does not provide for automatic water supply. This drinking bowl works on the principle of a washstand - press the nipple and get a portion of water. Birds very quickly begin to understand exactly how they need to act in order to get the long-awaited moisture and peck the nipple with pleasure. To prevent water from draining when you press on the floor, drinkers are equipped with special drop catchers, which are mounted directly under the nipple.

Vacuum bird drinkers

The vacuum drinker works on the same principle as our homemade one made from plastic bottles. The principle of its operation is no different. The only difference is that the bottle one was made by ourselves, and the vacuum one was produced at the factory. This drinker is a volumetric flask with a cup lid. A hole is made in the flask at a small height to allow water to drain, which is poured into the cup and stops flowing as it is filled. These drinkers are extremely convenient and lightweight.

Garden bird drinker made of cement

If desired, you can organize a real pool for the birds, and decorate it in an original style. To do this you will need burdock leaves and cement mortar.

You need to pour a pile of sand onto a flat surface. Place a couple of burdock leaves (face down) on this mound.

After this, dilute the cement at the rate of 1/3 (cement/sand) and dilute it with water to the consistency of thick sour cream. The resulting mixture must be carefully applied to the leaves. The layer thickness should not be more than 2cm. Moreover, closer to the edge of the sheet you need to make the layer as thin as possible.

Cover the product with film and wait until it dries. After drying, carefully separate the burdock from the cement. Actually, that's all.

The original birdbath is ready. You just need to sharpen the edges with a file and paint it in bright colors.

The original shape of the drinker will fit perfectly into the garden landscape and decorate any area.

When giving drinking water to chickens in open bowls, the birds spill the water and overturn the bowls, and changing them throughout the day is troublesome for the farmer. Installing special drinking bowls will protect drinking water from contamination and splashing and ensure its continuous supply to chickens.

Making drinkers with your own hands will help you save money and adapt these drinkers to the specific conditions of keeping poultry.

Regardless of the design and manufacturing method, drinking bowls for chickens made independently must meet the following requirements:

  • Convenient for use by birds;
  • Availability of protection against pollution and water spillage by chickens;
  • Material safety;
  • Reliability of the design;
  • Possibility of washing the drinking bowl from sediment.

Open drinkers are usually located at the back level of adult chickens to provide them with ease of drinking and prevent them from swimming in drinking water.

The structure should not have sharp edges or protruding nails that could injure birds.

It is important to remember that drinking bowls must be made of lightweight durable materials and firmly fixed in place in the chicken coop so that the chickens cannot tip over or damage the drinkers. Glass containers should not be used in the design due to their heavy weight and the risk of breaking.

For plastic parts of the drinker that come into contact with water, it is advisable to use food-grade plastic; in particular, it is not recommended to use containers for paints or varnishes for storing water, since these containers are made of plastic, which releases substances harmful to birds into the water.

Types of drinking bowls

Depending on the mechanism for supplying water to birds, the following main types of drinkers are distinguished:

  • Nipple;
  • Vacuum;
  • Cup;
  • Siphon.

The main advantage of nipple drinkers is that the drinking water in them is completely protected from debris or spillage, and chickens drink through special nipple valves, grasping them with their beaks and sucking out the water.

Drip drinkers are a type of nipple drinkers with an attached drip tray. The disadvantages of this type of drinkers include the need to install a significant part of the nipple valves in order to avoid crowding of chickens in line for drinking.

Vacuum drinkers are very easy to make and do not require the purchase of nipples, but they are more suitable for chickens than for adult birds.

Cup drinkers are more difficult to make yourself, but they are more reliable than vacuum ones and are suitable for a large number of chickens.

Siphon drinkers work on the principle of communicating vessels and allow them to be filled with water without going inside the chicken coop, but they require periodic cleaning of debris.

Depending on the type of water supply, drinking bowls can also be:

  • Automatic;
  • With manual feed.

Automatic drinkers only require regular changes of water in the tank, ensuring that the drinking bowl is filled at the required level due to the design features. These include vacuum and cup drinkers. In siphon and nipple drinkers, the water supply is regulated by the farmer and the chickens themselves, respectively.

One of the profitable types is the production of fuel briquettes.

Laying hen nests can be made in a variety of ways. Each of them is described in detail in.

Red-capped chickens were bred in Great Britain and are now a rare breed. You can find out more information about these birds.

Manufacturing procedure

When choosing the type of drinking bowl, it is important to take into account the availability of materials on the farm for its manufacture or the possibility of purchasing them. Some designs may have several implementation options, for example, vacuum and siphon drinkers can be made from a plastic bottle, while nipple drinkers will require harder plastic.

Nipple drinker

To make a drinking bowl of this type, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • Nipples (one per two individuals);
  • A piece of water pipe 1-2 meters long and 50 mm in diameter;
  • Drill according to nipple diameter (standard 9 mm);
  • Swordsman for cutting threads in plastic;
  • Pipe plugs;
  • Rectangular pipe connection adapters;
  • Fastening clamps and hooks;
  • Thin rubber gaskets;
  • Drop eliminators (if necessary);
  • Water shut-off valve in the pipe;
  • Plastic tank 15-20 liters for drinking water.

The number of connecting adapters must be determined depending on the design of the chicken coop and the method of supplying drinking water. Water can be supplied:

  • Settled;
  • Flow-through.
Running water is always fresh, does not require periodic refilling and does not mold in the pipes, but this option is only suitable if non-chlorinated water is supplied to the site and the water supply lines are located near the chicken coop.

In other cases, it is better to use a water tank, but it is important to remember that it must be removed and rinsed periodically.

A schematic diagram of a nipple drinker is shown in Figure 1.

Procedure for making a nipple drinker:

  1. Draw up a diagram of the location of pipe sections with nipples;
  2. Drill holes in the pipe with a drill every 0.2 m;
  3. Make nipple threads with a swordsman;
  4. Screw the nipples into the holes, laying waterproofing gaskets between them and the pipe;
  5. Arrange the pipe sections in the chicken coop according to the diagram, attaching them with fastening clamps to the wall of the chicken coop;
  6. Connect the pipe sections using adapters to each other and to the vertical section in the center of the structure; a water tank will be connected to the upper end of the vertical pipe;
  7. The vertical section of the pipe must be cut in half and connected tightly;
  8. A tap should be installed above the sealed connection to shut off the water before removing the tank to remove sediment and mold;
  9. Screw the hooks for attaching the tank to the wall of the chicken coop at a height of ¾ of the calculated height of the tank, counting from the connection of the tank with the vertical pipe;
  10. Hang the tank on the hooks;
  11. Attach drip trays to the nipples;
  12. Fill the tank with water and open the tap.

Drip pans are small plastic cups for collecting water (Fig. 2) and are installed to prevent falling drops of drinking from getting the coop flooring wet.

The pipe pattern may be broken, for example, when located in the corner of the chicken coop, but all pipes should be located at approximately the same height (25-30 cm) so that the chickens can reach the nipple with their beak.

Immediately after screwing in the nipples (before installing plugs and clamps), pipe sections should be thoroughly clear of plastic sawdust, since pockets of water blooms can form on them in the pipe.

The nipple drinker tank should be rinsed and cleaned periodically as shown in step 8, turning off the riser valve before removing the tank to prevent water from leaking into the coop.

Vacuum drinker

A vacuum drinker is an inverted container of water, lowered upside down into a drinking bowl. Water is held in the container due to the difference in air pressure in it and atmospheric pressure on the water released in the bowl. Thus, the water in the bowl automatically rises as you drink it to the level of the edge of the neck of the container (tank).

This type of drinker is the easiest to make. For a vacuum drinker you will need:

  • Plastic tank with a volume of 5-10 liters with a narrow neck;
  • A bowl or plastic basin 10 cm high (for adult chickens) and 2-3 cm for young chickens;
  • Tank mounts;
  • Screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • Self-tapping screws for fastening.

A plastic bottle or any other household container can be suitable as a plastic tank, but it is important to remember that the neck of the container should be smaller in diameter than the bowl.

Installation of a vacuum drinker occurs in the following stages:

  1. The location of the drinking bowl is determined (near one of the walls of the chicken coop);
  2. Mountings for the tank are screwed to the wall with self-tapping screws at the calculated height;
  3. Drinking water is collected in the tank;
  4. A bowl is leaning against the hole in the tank;
  5. The tank with the bowl must be quickly turned over to avoid spilling water on the floor of the chicken coop;
  6. The tank is fixed with fastenings.

The height of the bowl can be changed, depending on the age of the bird, by placing plywood plates under the bowl. The tank mounts should be installed so that the tank can be easily removed for rinsing and refilling with fresh water.

If you drill an additional hole from the top in a hard plastic tank, the process of adding water will be greatly simplified, since you will no longer need to remove the tank from its mounts.

Tanks for vacuum drinkers with ready-made holes can be purchased at construction markets.

It is important to remember that if there is no top hole in the tank, its volume should not exceed 20 liters, otherwise it will be difficult to change and rinse such a tank.

A vacuum drinker with a hole at the top does not have to be installed near the wall of the chicken coop; it can be installed on a stand either in the center of the chicken coop or in.

Siphon drinker

This drinker requires regular addition of water, but is very easy to install and allows you to pour water from outside the chicken coop. To make it you will need:

  • Flexible tube with a diameter of 3-8 mm with a shutter (faucet);
  • Container for water;
  • Drinking bowl;
  • Fasteners for tank and tube;
  • Drill according to tube diameter/

Any rubber hose or medical rubber tubes for a dropper will be suitable as a tube.

Procedure for installing a siphon drinker:

  1. Drill a hole in the wall of the chicken coop at a distance of 30-50 cm from the floor;
  2. Insert a flexible tube through the hole so that its inner end drops almost to the floor, and the shutter is located outside the room;
  3. Secure the water tank to the outside of the chicken coop using fasteners; the bottom of the tank should be 5-15 cm above the hole for the tube;
  4. Attach the outer end of the tube with the valve hermetically to the bottom of the tank;
  5. Attach the inside of the tube to the wall of the chicken coop with fasteners;
  6. Place a drinking bowl against the wall;
  7. Place the inner end of the tube in a bowl;
  8. Fill the tank with water.

To fill the bowl with water, open the shutter from the outside and wait 10-20 seconds, then close it. The farmer should determine the exact filling time experimentally.

The bowl should be small in size and fit tightly to the wall with fasteners to prevent chickens from turning it over, but at the same time it should be easy to remove to clean out any debris that has gotten into it.

You can combine a siphon and vacuum drinker into a single design if you use a tank closed at the top to provide a pressure difference, then to fill the bowl you will not need to open and close the valve on the tube every time, but use it only when cleaning the tank from mold.

Cup drinker

To make a drinking cup you will need the following materials:

  • Plastic cup with a capacity of 200-250 ml;
  • Plastic water tank;
  • Sections of water pipe with a diameter of 50 and 20 mm;
  • Pipe plugs;
  • Unclamping spring 5 cm high and 20 mm in diameter;
  • Silicone gasket;
  • Drill 5 mm;
  • A short steel rod with a diameter of 4 mm and a length of 5-6 cm;
  • Pipe fasteners;
  • Wood screws;
  • Plywood spacers 2 by 2 cm.

The size of the plastic cup should be selected depending on the number of chickens.

Up to 5 birds can drink from one wide cup with a diameter of 25 mm at the same time, so for 20 birds you will need at least two drinkers, provided that the birds take turns drinking.

A schematic diagram of a cup drinker is shown in Figure 4.

The principle of its operation is such that when the drinker is empty, the spring expands and a gasket comes out from the hole between the connection of the wide and narrow pipes, and water flows into the cup from the tank from above. When the cup is filled with water, its weight increases and compresses the spring, blocking access to water with a silicone gasket.

Procedure for making a drinking cup:

  1. A fastener is attached to the cup using self-tapping screws with spacers so that a through hole can be drilled in it in a horizontal plane to rotate the cup as shown in Fig. 4;
  2. A piece 20-25 cm long is cut from a pipe with a diameter of 50 mm;
  3. A plug is installed on the pipe section, in which a hole with a diameter of 20 mm is carefully made in the center;
  4. The burrs of the plug should be directed towards the inside of the pipe;
  5. The necessary slots are made in the pipe to secure the axis of the movable cup;
  6. A 50 mm piece of pipe is fixed in the floor of the chicken coop or aviary with the plug facing up;
  7. A spring is installed in the pipe;
  8. The gasket is glued to the cup fastener with waterproof glue;
  9. The cup is installed on an axle (steel rod);
  10. A pipe with a diameter of 20 mm is hermetically soldered to the top of the plug;
  11. A narrow pipe connects above to the water tank.
  12. Water is supplied to the system.

It should be remembered that the cup fastener must allow water to pass into it and have a hole the same size as the silicone gasket.

It is best to make a hole in the plug using a piece of iron (for example, fittings) of a suitable diameter heated over a fire. To remove and clean the tank, a tap and a sealed disconnecting clamp must be installed in the narrow pipe, as in a nipple drinker.

Before installing a cup drinker, you should accurately determine the number of movable cups depending on the number of chickens. When installing several cups, you should outline a plan for their location and connect all the narrow tubes extending from each wide tube with a cup fixed in the floor using connecting adapters with one common pipe leading to the water tank.

From a plastic bottle

With a small number of chickens, a simple and economical way would be to install a drinking bowl from a plastic bottle. This drinker does not have an automatic water supply system, but its manufacture is much simpler compared to the design options described above.

For installation, you need to take a plastic bottle with a volume of one and a half or two liters and cut oblong holes in it 3-4 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. Such a drinker should be installed horizontally at a height of 15-20 cm from the floor of the chicken coop, away from the perches to prevent rapid contamination water for chickens. The bottle cap must be tightly closed.

In the simplest version, fresh water is poured into the drinker directly through the drinking holes, but you can combine this design with other types of drinkers to automatically supply water, for example, by lowering a siphon drinker hose into one of the holes.

When installing several bottle drinkers, they can be filled from one common open tank using tubes with plugs (siphon type) or hermetically connected to a tank tightly closed at the top (vacuum type).

It's no secret that birds in a summer cottage are almost always a good thing. Naturally, with the exception of a large number of them, when the birds begin to eat fruit trees and bushes, but even in this case you should not despair, because it is always yours. Sparrows, titmice and bullfinches are of particular importance on the site. In summer, birds free the garden from harmful insects that can destroy the entire area. In winter, birds delight garden owners with their chirping sounds.

In order for birds to want to live on your site, they need to create good living conditions. The best way to lure birds is to create bird feeders and waterers with your own hands. You can put bread or cereal grains in them, just be very careful, since not all cereals are suitable for birds to eat. Some species can make them sick or even die. Naturally, only a feeder is not enough for them; birds love water, so they cannot do without a drinking bowl.

What is a feeder-drinker?

In almost all cases, the feeder-drinker is a small plastic box without a lid with two or more fasteners. Either food is poured into it or water is poured into it. This is its main drawback. Although this design is called a “feeder-drinker,” it still performs only one function. It is impossible to combine the two; you won’t pour water into the cereal or vice versa. Another significant disadvantage is that such structures are sold without lids, and any natural sediment can spoil the food or water for the birds. Naturally, you can buy a bird feeder and a bird drinker separately, that is, two separate containers. Or you can make them yourself.

How to make a drinking bowl with your own hands from plastic bottles?

The simplest option is a drinking bowl made of plastic containers. If you do everything according to the instructions, then you can build such a structure in literally half an hour, and sometimes it takes less time. To create it, you need to purchase two plastic containers: the first with a volume of 5 liters, the second with a volume of 2 liters.

Algorithm for creating a drinking bowl with your own hands:

1. A plastic container with a volume of 5 liters should be cut so that it does not turn out to be a bowl with a stopper at the bottom. Its depth should not exceed 12 centimeters, since you should not forget that the birds should be as comfortable as possible in using the drinker.

2. The corks are unscrewed from both bottles and connected to each other using a bolt. Since they are of different diameters, a small plug is inserted into a large one, secured and screwed.

3. Take a two-liter plastic container, you need to make a small hole in it (no more than 10 mm). The height of the hole should not exceed the depth of the five-liter plastic container. Based on the fact that we made the bowl about 12 centimeters, then the hole in a two-liter container should be made at a height of 8-9 centimeters from the throat.

4. A two-liter container is filled with water and screwed to the bowl using connected stoppers.

5. The most important thing remains - installing this birdbath with your own hands. The container is turned upside down, and it turns out that water flows from a two-liter container into the bowl. Please note that it will only build up to the level to which the hole is made. As soon as the water begins to evaporate or the birds drink it, everything will automatically repeat itself and the water will always be in the bowl. Here's a simple and amazing design you can get.

Nipple bird drinkers

This version of drinking bowls differs significantly from the previous method. Such designs are sold in special stores, and their cost is minimal. However, for masters, in this article we will tell you the principle of its creation.

The first thing to understand is that this is not an automatic drinker, that is, there will not be a constant supply of water. This container is made according to the principle of a washstand - press a button and the water flows. Birds are very smart, so they immediately begin to understand how this system works. To prevent water from dripping onto the ground, the structures are made with special drip eliminators, which are installed under the nipple.

How to make vacuum drinkers?

The method of operation of such a container is exactly the same as a container made of two plastic bottles. There is only one difference - you made the plastic drinkers yourself, while the vacuum ones were created for you by the equipment at the factory. This drinking bowl is a large flask with a bowl. The flask is an analogue of a two-liter bottle, and the bowl lid is an analogue of a five-liter eggplant. Such designs are quite easy to use.

How to make a birdbath out of concrete?

If you have enough time, energy and strength, you can create a real pool for birds. You can decorate it in a unique style. You only need two elements: burdock (leaves) and a cement mixture. A handful of sand is poured onto the surface, and several burdock leaves are placed on it (face down). Next, the solution is diluted (1 part cement and 3 parts sand). It is diluted to a homogeneous substance with water. The mixture you have obtained is applied to the leaves.

The thickness of the cement mortar should not exceed 2 centimeters. Moreover, towards the edges the layer decreases somewhat. The future drinking bowl is covered with polyethylene and waited for complete drying. Afterwards, the burdock leaf is carefully separated from the solution. Actually, this completes the entire creation of a bird drinker. All that remains is to carefully process the edges and paint them in a colorful color. This drinker will suit any garden landscape.

Now more and more people at their dachas are raising poultry with their own hands. This trend is easily explained by several factors. The first and main thing is environmental friendliness. You know exactly where your chickens were raised and what you fed them. Therefore, the risk of eating low-quality meat is reduced to zero.

Organizing a chicken coop with your own hands at your dacha allows you to eat fresh eggs every morning. Every farmer knows that they taste completely different from store-bought ones.

Moreover, do not forget about the possibility of sale. Keepers of large chicken coops always sell meat and eggs to neighbors, and they are happy to buy them because they know where the products were grown and under what conditions.

However, in order to get a high-quality final product and at the same time minimize your participation in all processes in the chicken coop, you need to organize everything correctly. One of the most important elements in this structure is the chicken drinker.

Important ! You don’t have to buy a drinking bowl for chickens - you can make it yourself.

To create a drinking bowl for chickens with your own hands, you can use things available at every dacha. Although for some designs you will have to purchase several items that will allow you to quickly and efficiently provide the bird with water.

How should drinking bowls be used for chickens?

Requirements

You need to start creating a drinking bowl for chickens with your own hands by studying the requirements for this design. It is worth recognizing that chickens are very sloppy birds. If everything is not arranged securely, the chicken may jump into the drinker or even turn it over.

Attention ! Chickens should consume only fresh, clean water - this is the key to their health.

When calculating the amount of water that chickens should consume, a number of factors are taken into account, including:

  • ambient temperature,
  • feed consumed by chickens,
  • air temperature.

If we take average indicators, then each chicken should drink about one and a half liters of water per day. Otherwise, the chickens may become dehydrated.

To make it comfortable for chickens to drink water from a drinking bowl made by you, the design must meet the following parameters:

  • Ease of use. When creating a drinking bowl for chickens with your own hands, you should consider the possibility of automatically filling the tank from the pipeline. This will allow you to minimize the effort required to care for the bird.
  • Sustainability. The drinking bowl must be firmly installed. If the structure turns over, it will not only create additional humidity in the chicken coop, but also leave the chickens without water. On a hot day this can end extremely sadly.
  • Strength. Chickens are not as cute birds as you might think. An attack by these birds can end extremely unfortunately for a do-it-yourself drinking bowl.
  • Water purity. Clean water is a guarantee that your pets will be healthy. Microbes quickly breed in open tanks. In addition, chickens are far from the cleanest animals. For them, a swim in a drinking bowl made by your own hands costs nothing. In addition, they can contaminate it with their droppings. Insulate the drinking bowl, and these problems will not be a problem for you.
  • Safety. This is an extremely important criterion when creating a drinking bowl for chickens with your own hands. You must show maximum attention in this matter. It is best to choose high-quality plastic as the main construction material. Containers made of metal can interact dangerously with medications and harm chickens.
  • The edges. The sides of home-made chicken drinkers must be treated. Otherwise the bird may get hurt.

Of course, if you wish, you can recall a whole series of requirements that can be put forward for the chicken drinker that you want to make with your own hands. For example, it wouldn’t hurt to install frost protection. To do it, just take several heating elements and install them under the container.

Important ! Aquarium heaters are best suited for heating drinking bowls for home-made chickens.

What types of drinkers are there?

Before you start creating the design you need with your own hands, let’s look at what types of drinkers for chickens there are. It is worth recognizing that during the development of poultry farming, farmers came up with a wide variety of designs. Some of them are, in fact, the only ones of their kind. But let's look at those designs that are most often used when creating modern drinkers:

  • nipple,
  • vacuum,
  • cup,
  • siphon.

Some farmers use simple drinking containers when creating drinking bowls for chickens. True, in terms of their functional characteristics they are significantly inferior to all other options.

Important ! The simplest do-it-yourself drinking bowls for chickens are galvanized or enameled basins. Plastic bowls also work well.

Unfortunately, containers made from basins or buckets have many disadvantages. Firstly, they need to change the water once a day, as debris gets into the containers. Secondly, such structures often tip over. The chickens sit on top and the water ends up on the floor.

Attention ! Open saucers can only be used for chickens.

Siphon drinkers have good reliability and convenience. Moreover, their capacity is more than enough to water a small brood of chickens. The structure consists of the following elements:

  • glasses,
  • pallet,
  • siphon system.

As you can see, the design is extremely simple. Therefore, it is quite possible for every person to do it. Such drinkers can be installed on legs and hung on the wall. Devices that are installed directly on the floor are popular.

A vacuum drinker for chickens, which you make with your own hands, will be very similar in design features to a siphon one.

In order to make a vacuum drinker, just select the desired container (in Figure No. 1), a 1-1.5 liter jar will do, pour clean water into it (in Figure No. 2) to the brim.

Place two small blocks on the neck of the jar (in picture No. 4). Place a bowl or deep saucer (in picture No. 3) on the blocks and turn them over sharply. The water in the bowl will be replenished automatically, and the pouring of water from the jar will be resisted by atmospheric pressure.

A cup drinker for chickens easily copes with the task of automating water supply. It is easy to do with your own hands. Thanks to it, the chickens will always be watered even without your direct participation. The structure consists of the following elements:

  • hose,
  • containers,
  • tank.

Water enters the bowl directly from the tank through a hose. In addition, due to the pressure, it moves down, as a result of which the supply hole is blocked.

You can achieve automation of all processes in a chicken coop with your own hands using a nipple or cup drinker for chickens. The first is now the most popular among poultry farmers because of its practicality, reliability and ease of installation.

The nipple drinker for chickens can be used by both adults and chickens. For boilers and chickens, you need to install structures that open as you please. If we talk about laying hens, then they cope quite well with pins that move up and down.

Important ! Drop eliminators help achieve much more economical water consumption.

DIY nipple drinker for chickens

It is not for nothing that this drinking bowl is considered the best of all, but to make it with your own hands you will need to spend a lot of effort and time. The simplest option includes a plastic bucket. Moreover, it should have a decent diameter.

You need to make four holes in the bottom. The diameter of each of them should be nine millimeters. It is in them that you will subsequently need to screw in the nipples with your own hands.

The bucket must be hung at a height sufficient for the mechanism to operate effectively. The nipple drinker for chickens is easy to clean, but it must be filled manually. But don’t sigh, the design includes the ability to connect to a water supply. You can also connect to a tank. But this will require a lot of effort.

To get started, take care to look for elements such as:

  1. Square pipe. It must have grooves. The wall size is fixed - 22 x 22 mm.
  2. Nipples. You will need a lot of them. You expect that you will need 5 dispensers per meter.
  3. Microcup drinkers. As an alternative, drift eliminators can be used. The number of these elements should be equal to the number of nipples installed for you.
  4. Adapter from square to round pipe. You will also need a plug.
  5. The hose is flexible enough to be installed in difficult places.
  6. 9mm drill and tap with a fixed radius of 1/8 inch.

You also need to take care of two clamps. They will secure the pipe. Their number may be large. The main thing is that the pipe is firmly fixed.

When creating a drinking bowl for chickens with your own hands, the selection of the nipple is of great importance. The fact is that birds of different ages need different nipples. For example, the 3600 model can rotate 360 degrees. It is ideal for young animals.

Important ! If you are making a waterer for adult chickens with your own hands, the best option would be 1800 nipples. They are activated by up and down movement.

To assemble a high-quality nipple drinker for chickens with your own hands, follow these steps:

  1. First, estimate the distance between the nipples. It should be about 25 centimeters.
  2. Use a screwdriver to drill holes. A drill will also work. You need to drill from the side of the groove. The main thing is that water does not leak.
  3. You need to make the threads in the holes with your own hands using a tap.
  4. The plug must be used to close one side of the pipe. On the second one you need to put on an adapter to which the hose will be attached.
  5. Screw in the nipple.
  6. Install a drip eliminator. As an alternative, you can use a micro-cup chicken drinker.
  7. The clamps need to be secured to the wall of the poultry house and the pipe installed.

The second end of the hose is connected to the tank or water supply. At the end of constructing a drinking bowl for chickens with your own hands, you need to process all the joints. You can use a special tape for this.

If you think that you can do without drip eliminators or you were unable to buy them, then a similar drinking bowl for chickens can be made from a round pipe by drilling holes for nipples.

The most important thing is to install the nipples correctly, since an incorrectly installed nipple will not work

Simpler DIY drinking bowls

There are also simpler drinking bowls for chickens that you can easily make with your own hands. An excellent example in this context is a vacuum drinker. All you need to create it is:

  • nipples 1800,
  • drill,
  • 9 mm drill,
  • bucket or plastic container.

Holes are made in the lid of the vessel. Nipples are inserted into them, after which the bucket is filled with water. You can consider that the waterer for chickens is made with your own hands.

Results

As you can see, every person can make a device to water a bird. Especially if you focus on the simplest option. Creating an automated water supply will take a little more time, but the result in minimizing the human factor in the process of caring for pets is worth it.

Spring is coming—and with it the summer season. That is, a hot (we hope) summer. During the hot summer, not only tomatoes can suffer, but also all sorts of small birds that may not have enough water. Therefore, in the garden you can organize a drinking bowl for birds and other small animals. In addition to the universal, so to speak, value, DIY drinking bowl in the garden It also acquires aesthetic value. So, you can watch with interest and pleasure for quite a long time various birds that escape the heat with the help of a beautiful accessory.

A do-it-yourself drinking bowl in the garden is also valuable because, firstly, it is much cheaper than purchased drinking bowls, and, secondly, you choose the design of such a drinking bowl yourself. Instead of coordinating your tastes with the dubious tastes of the designers of standard drinking bowls. Well, then, the drinking bowl is very simple.

We are planning to prepare such a miracle from the “Handicraft” section:

For this we need:

  • approximately 4 kilograms of cement
  • a large burdock leaf (about 40 by 50 cm) or any other large thick leaf ( EXCEPT HORGE !)
  • a small piece of pipe (plastic or metal) with a diameter of 10 cm and a height of 10-15 cm for a stand
  • a pile of earth, water, sand, cellophane
  • patience and hope :)

Accordingly, the first thing we will start with is the organization of the substrate. The substrate is a mass of sand (or earth) that will serve as a support for our future concrete casting.

What we do for this:

  1. Spread polyethylene on the table (floor)
  2. On polyethylene we make a slide of wet sand (earth)
  3. On a sand hill we make a more convex top than the slopes below - to give the product volume and depth.

Here's what we get:

Next, cover the entire structure with polyethylene. If you are working outside, press the corners of the plastic film with something heavy so that sudden winds do not interfere with the creative process. Place a large burdock leaf on top of the polyethylene. If there are holes in the sheet, you can close them with pieces from another sheet. Here's what we have at this stage:

Next you need to mix the concrete (3 parts sand, 1 cement and water). You need so much water to get very thick concrete so that it does not flow off the form in the future. Well, then the finished concrete is applied to a burdock leaf (etc.) in a layer of about 2 centimeters; at the edges the layer thins to 1 centimeter. Example result:

Concrete is poured inside the pipe; the edges of the pipe are connected to the main concrete mass using the same concrete:

Well, then you need to cover everything with polyethylene (from the heat and rain), secure the film in the corners with something heavy and leave it to set for 2-3 days.

After this, you need to remove the polyethylene, carefully turn the product over and tear the sheet off the concrete. If the sheet comes off with difficulty, you can moisten it with water and things will go easier.

Well, then - a field for creativity! You need to color this sheet. A variety of paints can be used - spray can, acrylic and any other resistant to atmospheric conditions. From this point of view, it is quite possible that the advice from the “Handicraft” section will help you.

In case coloring the sheet is too difficult, you can very easily avoid having to paint the sheet. Thus, construction stores sell a variety of dyes for concrete. You need to buy 1-3 shades of green and when making concrete, mix the dyes into the concrete. By pouring concrete of various shades we will get a wonderful green leaf. Naturally, if you use dyes of a different color, the result will be more unusual :)

And one more thing: the cutting for this concrete sheet is a bit of a tricky job. So if you are not a follower of absolute realism, then the stem of the sample leaf needs to be cut off completely. This will save you from many problems.

Now a couple of important nuances. Firstly, when working with concrete and cement, you need to remember that during the hardening process this substance does NOT dry, but sets. For concrete and cement to set, a number of conditions are necessary, of which the most important in our case is moisture. For cement to set, it must have a certain moisture content. If there is too much moisture, setting occurs completely - but not in the form of a monolith; the design turns out to be loose and can easily break.

If there is too little moisture, then the cement will use all the water that was in its composition to set, but it will not have enough water for complete 100% hardening. Therefore, the product will turn out to be more fragile than if we maintained sufficient moisture in the cement.

Therefore, we cover our product with film to protect it from rain and strong evaporation. Well, if it’s too hot, you can periodically lift the film and spray the product with water.

Although, on the other hand, such nuances for drinking water in the garden may be unnecessary. After all, it’s not the ostriches who will drink water from it...

In general, happy creativity!
