It should be taken into account that the intensity of the mass gained by water hyacinth is directly related to the length of daylight hours; the shorter it is, the faster the growth occurs. When trying to use this moment in collecting young rosettes, we must not forget that reproduction leads to a decrease in the illuminated area in the reservoir and a drop in oxygen levels, which can cause damage to other vegetation, as well as some species of mollusks, fish and various amphibians.

In their natural habitats, Eichornia is also propagated by seeds. But for the countries of the former CIS, this method is not applicable due to the fact that the plant needs to be provided with a high air temperature - at least 35 degrees.

How does water hyacinth overwinter?


In the autumn, the air temperature already drops quite significantly for such a heat-loving plant as eichornia, so you should first think about creating all the necessary conditions for its wintering. It will not survive in a natural reservoir, so you will need to move the water hyacinth to a warm room with a good level of light. You can use a basin, an aquarium, etc. as a storage container during the dormant period. Take the water for the plant that it was in during the summer. For rooting, sludge is added to the bottom.

In the winter months, Eichornia no longer needs excessively high temperatures; it is enough for the air and water to be warmed up to 20 degrees Celsius. All this is not difficult to organize, but you should also think about a sufficient level of illumination, since sockets perceive the lack of light extremely negatively, you need to use fluorescent lamps to ensure a 14-hour day.

For normal wintering, water hyacinth will also need oxygen in sufficient quantities, but you need to take into account that the plant does not like drafts and may die if due attention is not paid to this point. In addition, we must not forget about feeding, since Eichornia actively feeds all year round, a forced “hunger strike” will negatively affect its condition. To support water hyacinth, you can periodically feed it small amounts of fertilizer intended for aquarium plants.

The use of eichornia in landscape design


When decorating open reservoirs with water hyacinth, you need to take into account some points. As already mentioned, the plant is afraid of drafts, so if possible you need to protect it from them. For this purpose, you can plant marsh irises, cattails or other vertically growing plants along the edge of the reservoir.

Some landscape designers are trying to combine eichornia and water lilies, as their combination looks quite impressive. But you need to take into account that in the company of such an aggressive neighbor, other plant species do not feel well and may die. Eichornia rosettes over time quickly cover the entire surface, preventing the penetration of sunlight and consuming oxygen from the water in huge quantities, which causes the death of fish, shells and other aquatic life. Therefore, you need to worry about additional aeration so that underwater inhabitants do not suffer from the beauty of the flowering plant.

The main pests and diseases of Eichornia


Water hyacinth is not predisposed to any particular diseases and problems with its condition are always the result of improper care. The plant itself is very strong and aggressive, so even pests common to other species are not afraid of it. Some problems have only been seen with weevil exposure.

Based on this, some countries on the African continent, where eichornia grows immensely and causes a lot of inconvenience, even at one time decided to specially propagate the weevil beetle so that it would reduce the population of water hyacinth. Unfortunately, this experiment failed miserably, which allows us to say with confidence that there are simply no particularly dangerous pests that could destroy the plant in nature.

Difficulties encountered when growing eichornia:

  1. The appearance of brown spots usually indicates a lack of moisture in the air or the presence of drafts. In this case, it is enough to eliminate the cause so that the beautiful appearance is restored.
  2. In some cases, the formation of brown spotting may be a consequence of incipient putrefactive processes. But, as a rule, this phenomenon is preceded by rotting of the cuttings, which is difficult not to notice. Here you will have to make, for example, special float rings from foam plastic that will hold the leaves above the surface, while the roots will remain submerged in the water.

Artificial ponds with plants floating on the surface look especially attractive. Are there crops that can be grown both in an aquarium in an apartment and outdoors, for example, in a pond? There are such plants, and one of them is Eichornia, a water hyacinth native to South America.

The culture appeared on the Russian market relatively recently, while in the countries of Asia, Africa and the southern United States it is widespread. Growing in the wild, water hyacinth chooses lakes and slow-flowing rivers as its habitat. There it is capable of forming impassable thickets, very quickly “spreading” across the surface of the water.

For such fertility, Eichornia was nicknamed “water plague”; quite often it creates a lot of inconvenience for local residents, complicating the movement of surface transport, threatening animal and fish populations, not to mention the fact that the crop quickly absorbs all the plants located in the neighborhood.

Description of the species, photos, characteristics and flowering time of water hyacinth

Eichornia thick-legged or water hyacinth belongs to the class Monocots of the Pontederiaceae family. You can find mention of this plant under the names “beautiful eichornia” or “excellent”.

This is a perennial herbaceous plant with shiny leathery leaves up to 20 cm long, having a round or elliptical shape. They are assembled into a rosette, inside which a “cushion” of air is formed, due to which the water hyacinth floats on the water.

The roots of the crop can reach 60 cm in length. If the depth of the reservoir where eichornia grows is less than 50 cm, then the plant will not float, but will take root in the muddy soil.

The stems of the plant reach 10-15 cm in length, and on each of them about 12-15 buds are formed, from which flowers bloom with a diameter of 2-3 cm. They come in different shades: white, pink, blue or lilac. Their lifespan is only one day, after which they disappear under water.



For water hyacinth to bloom, a temperature of at least +28 degrees is required. When the indicator drops to + 22, flowering stops. In cold summers, buds will not appear at all, and only a lush “cap” of green foliage will float on the surface of the water.

Features of growing water hyacinth in a pond

Eichornia is planted in late spring or early summer, when the temperature ranges from +24 to +30 and the pond warms up well.

For normal growth and development, it is necessary to pre-fertilize the soil using the following compositions:

  • humus;
  • purified bottom sludge;
  • mullein or compost;
  • complex fertilizer.

These compositions are also suitable for periodic feeding of plantings. The growth of a crop directly depends on the amount of nutrients in the aquatic environment.

Important! When working with water hyacinth, you only need to wear gloves, since the juice of this plant is poisonous.

Growing water hyacinth in an aquarium

Water hyacinth Eichornia can be grown not only in a pond, but also in an aquarium.

To grow a crop in a home pond, you need:

  • Maintain optimal water quality. The temperature should be at least 25 degrees, acidity from 6 to 6.8 pH, and hardness less than 6 units.
  • Equip the tank with lamps. Daylight hours for water hyacinth should last at least 12 hours. It is important to remember that longer lighting will cause the plantings to actively grow and there will be a need for frequent thinning.
  • Adjust the water filtration and aeration system. If the necessary equipment is not installed in the aquarium, its contents will quickly “bloom” and emit an unpleasant odor.
  • Plant nutrition. Fertilizers intended for aquarium crops will need to be applied year-round. Liquid formulations for indoor flowers are also suitable for water hyacinth.
  • Thinning. To prevent water hyacinth from blocking the access of light and air to an artificial reservoir, it should not be allowed to grow strongly over the surface and periodically remove “extra” plants from the reservoir.

Important! Eichornia can only be planted in large aquariums, since if there is not enough space, the plant will develop poorly and quickly die.

Eichornia propagation methods

Water hyacinth can reproduce both vegetatively and by seed.

In the first case, to increase the number of plantings, you will need to do the following:


When the plants take root and are strong enough, you can move them to their permanent habitat.

It is almost impossible to propagate water hyacinth by seeds in the Russian climate. The fact is that for the planting material to ripen, an air temperature of at least +35 degrees will be required.

How does water hyacinth overwinter?

The heat-loving airhornia will not tolerate temperatures below 0 degrees. To preserve the plantings until next season, you will need to move them to a warm environment. Storage in winter can be done in an aquarium or other transparent container, at the bottom of which sand or silt will be placed.

To successfully winter water hyacinth, you must follow the following rules:

  • maintain the water temperature in the quarantine tank at the same level as in the flower’s permanent habitat;
  • place fertilized soil at the bottom of the container so that the roots of the plant can be properly nourished;
  • feed the plant regularly.

It is advisable to organize lighting for plantings for 12 hours a day. But if this is not possible, it is enough to place a container with water hyacinths on the windowsill on the south side of the house. And after consistently warm weather sets in, it can be moved to its native pond, where it will quickly grow a mass of leaves and throw out a flower stalk by the end of summer.

In winter, Eichornia should be moved to a warm place.

On a note. If the region where eichornia grows has a mild and not frosty winter, it will overwinter well in a greenhouse, placed in an ordinary water barrel.

The use of water hyacinth in landscape design

As mentioned above, eichornia is used to decorate outdoor ponds or large aquariums.

In the first case, it would be a good idea to place the plantings near a small waterfall or stream, which will provide an influx of oxygen into the aquatic environment. This will benefit the culture and allow it to grow faster.

In aquariums, water hyacinth is used as an accent; it looks advantageous in combination with large shells, oddly shaped stones and various decorative elements.

The main thing is to constantly control the growth of eichornia and not let it grow too much, filling all the space, then it will please the eye for many years and will not harm the inhabitants of the reservoir.
