By what criteria can you determine the compatibility of fabrics?

Conventionally, you look at the color scheme of the fabric and break down the color into its components. For example, you buy malachite-colored fabric, malachite is a yellow tone with a confident dose of blue. What are the rules for combining fabrics?
If we are talking about combinations of fabrics in a multi-layer format, then the rule is very simple - the closer the layer of clothing is to the body, the thinner the fabric, and then in increasing order.
Multi-layered ensembles with a combination of different patterns look very interesting, but this is aerobatics, requiring a good sense of rhythms and colors. It’s better to start with monochromatic ensembles, adding one pattern to them.
By the way, to make multi-layering look interesting, do not forget that the textures of the fabrics should also be different.
Are there any restrictions on fabric combinations based on body types? Which body type should wear which fabrics are best?
As you know, drawing is a good optical illusion that can help both lengthen your legs and make them visually more appetizing. Same with the rest of the body. Remember that it is extremely important for each of us to know the most advantageous points of the body, which will always be in the center of the composition of the costume. Next, we focus on weight - if you are fragile, give preference to thin fabrics with non-contrasting patterns; for girls of average height, vertical stripes are suitable, but for plump girls, it is important to carefully choose fabrics with patterns, giving preference to denser textures and a sheath cut.A little practice
In the combination of textures, as well as in the combination of patterns or colors, in a costume ensemble there is always a dialogue when the idea of the most iconic thing in the ensemble is developed either according to the principle of contrast or according to the principle of support. The massiveness and volume of the suede jacket is supported by the matteness of the linen dress. At the same time, the ensemble would look boring if the color of the jacket and dress were the same. As a rule, if the textures are approximately similar in format, they should be divided by color. By the way, the metallic coating on the shoes also favorably emphasizes the velvety texture of the jacket and dress. What’s interesting is that 2 techniques are used: the technique of opposition (smooth, metallic surface of the shoes and matte fabrics in the ensemble), the principle of kinship - approximately the same texture of the jacket and dress is “broken” by color.

The same principle - on the one hand, the costume ensemble is built on the principle of balanced proportions. If you look, the jumper and pencil skirt are ½ to ½ proportions. If the colors and textures were completely identical, such an image would look downright boring. What do designers do? On the one hand, they contrast the matte texture of cashmere with the metallic shine of brocade, on the other hand, they combine such different textures with a spot of color: notice how well the tone of the scarf is chosen to match the pattern on the skirt.

Another extremely interesting topic is how to combine fur with fabric? In fact, fur always suppresses any texture with its heaviness and picturesqueness, so fabrics with a pronounced texture, shine, or color may look too pretentious and fail to cope with the aesthetic task. In this case, it turned out quite successfully to stylize sheepskin fur with thin coarse wool fabric - the small roughness of the woolen fabric of the skirt goes well with the velvety and matteness of the sheepskin, creating a complex stylistic pair in which the jacket clearly dominates.

Fabrics with a hard, satin sheen are extremely demanding on the partner: on the one hand, the color of the fabric in a pair must be sharp, have a sharpness that will look good with the icy sheen of satin. On the other hand, the texture of this companion fabric should not attract attention, because in an ensemble with satin elements, the most important role will always be given to shine.

We are often asked the question: what to combine neoprene items with? This ultra-modern and fashionable fabric looks extremely interesting in its cut - the heaviness and density of neoprene creates an almost fabulous, mystical outline. On the other hand, due to its weight, neoprene is extremely demanding on the adjacent texture: perhaps only thick knitwear and rough leather can become a worthy partner in a suit ensemble. As, for example, in the photo presented above - the knitted elastic band of the dress shows the structure of the image even more clearly.

If you want your look to look stylish and interesting, then, first of all, you need to move away from standard concepts about what fabrics are combined with each other.Of course, no one has canceled the long-proven combinations; they will still look good. But now it is already considered a classic, so you can use them if you intend to create such a more or less classic look. If you want to show that you have a keen sense of trends, then go for it - mix fabrics and styles of different textures () and don’t be afraid of anything!
There is one basic rule here: when you combine
- chic festive fabrics (jacquard, velvet, chiffon, lace, satin, organza) with simple everyday ones (cotton, denim, wool),
- heavy dense textures (leather, fur, suede, drape, tweed) with light and weightless ones (silk, chiffon, lace),
- textures with matte and glossy surface (satin, patent leather),
- textures are smooth and with a pronounced texture (coarse knitted wool, boucle, tweed, fur, corduroy, velvet),
For example, you have the task of choosing something to pair with jeans. Of course, everyone knows that cotton goes well with denim (which, by the way, is basically the same thing). So, if you pair a shirt with jeans, you can never go wrong. Or a T-shirt. It will always look organic.
The same can be said about denim worn over a cotton dress. It always looks good, no doubt about it.
In this case, the girl used another stylish technique - a combination of different styles in one look: denim with a romantic dress with a floral print.
But if you want an edgier, stylish set? Then try adding a top with sequins to the same jeans (or a velvet, satin, jacquard top, etc.), and use denim to balance out an overly feminine flowy chiffon dress. You will see the effect will be amazing.

Textures such as chiffon, silk, lace, organza, velvet and satin obviously work well together. So if you wear a satin jacket with a lace or silk dress, you will undoubtedly get a chic holiday outfit. That's not to say it's not beautiful. This combination will always look good. It’s just that current fashion requires a little imagination from us, allowing us to go beyond the usual.
All you have to do is mix a chiffon dress with rough leather (or even sheepskin), and it will look completely different: the rough fabric emphasizes the ephemerality and fragility of such a dress. The result is a very interesting, stylish everyday look. But, of course, for a formal event it is better to prefer the first, that is, classic, option.
You can create stunning contrast using fabrics with different textures by combining such a delicate material with coarse wool. The most contrasting options look especially good: for example, a coarse knit sweater with very thin lace or silk.
By the way, this technique also applies to accessories. It is better to choose a matte bag for patent leather shoes, and vice versa.
Shoes made of smooth leather look good with bags with a pronounced texture (crocodile, python, fur, lint), and vice versa.
Suede bags are also best worn with smooth shoes, and suede shoes with smooth bags. Or you can choose some texture different from suede, the same python, for example.
I would like to discuss such a topic as combining fabrics and textures in clothes.
How often do we come across a situation where we bought a fabric we really liked, brought it home and... something is wrong. Either the color doesn’t suit, or the pattern is too colorful or large, or the coloring makes it look fat. Another situation is that in a store fabrics are arranged together with companions that match the color, for example, knitwear with chiffon, or wool with silk..., and you want to take it all home, and then again the questions are, how and what to make from it? The answer to these and many other questions can be a combination of fabrics and textures.
I will try to summarize here my thoughts on what can be achieved by combining fabrics of different or identical colors and textures. I will add pictures as soon as possible, and of course, I hope for the club’s help in supporting the topic..
1. Sometimes it happens that you really like a rag, but it doesn’t suit the color type, here you can find a color that matches it and place it closer to your face. (This can be a yoke, collar or ruffle)
2. The fabric matches the color type, but the pattern is such that it is undesirable to sew the entire outfit from it. That is, the design is very large or makes the eyes sway, like a pied-de-poule or a small check.
3. Beautiful mesh, organza, lace, etc. transparent fabrics - we combine them to “cover the body” on one side, and to emphasize the beauty of the embroidery/pattern on the other.
4. By combining fabrics, we can get new colors - for example, by applying a black mesh with embroidery to bright scarlet silk we get a crimson tone, etc.
5. Obtaining new textures - applique, chenille, felting...
6. Emphasize the beauty and texture of one fabric at the expense of another.
7. Strengthening the effect of constructive lines.
8. Combining fabrics to draw attention to parts of the body (eg, face and legs) and, accordingly, hiding others (eg, dark panels at the waist on the sides).
9. “Drawing” on clothes, for example, we draw a silhouette using a combination of different pieces of fabric.
10. Combination of companion fabrics. Same colors, but different textures, for example, we sew a dress from knitwear, and the sleeves and ruffles on the collar are made of chiffon, but of the same color.
11. Design delights, i.e. simply accents as a means of drawing attention to something in the costume.
12. Creating multi-layered clothing, for example, a dress that resembles a suit in silhouette.
13. Playing with fabric compatibility as an element of creativity and the destruction of hamster reserves, disposal of leftovers and savings in times of crisis...
14. By combining fabrics and textures, it is possible to create clothes in various styles, such as folk, country, patchwork... As well as recreating costumes from different eras.
