So, what do you need before making a septic tank from tires? To begin with, communications must be brought to the location of the future septic tank. To protect against freezing and damage, the sewer pipe must be insulated and protected with a duct. After this, we determine the depth and width of the hole.

The size of the septic tank must correspond to the average daily volume of wastewater multiplied by three. Based on this, we select the diameter and number of tires.

Having placed one of the tires on the ground, you need to draw the boundaries of the holes for the septic tank. A gap between the outer side of the tire and the soil can be left for ease of insertion of tires and for additional insulation of the septic tank. Then we dig holes for the tanks and bury the tires. The top liquid level should always be below the soil level. This must be taken into account when laying tires.

The bottom of the first septic tank must be filled with crushed stone (approximately 30 cm) and lined with some material that does not allow liquid to penetrate into the soil. The construction of a septic tank involves discharging settled water directly into the ground, so in the bottom of the second well, for better drainage, you can drill a well about five meters and insert a perforated flexible plastic pipe there. It will need to be covered with crushed stone to a depth of about 10 cm so that the bottom does not silt and water passes through without obstacles. Inside the tire tank, the pipe should rise one meter, and it is better to cover its top with a fine mesh. The bottom around the pipe must also be covered with crushed stone and sand. But with a good level of water absorption by the soil, in the last tank it will be sufficient only to use a filter bottom.

Now you need to make holes for the pipe in both tanks. The pipe must go into the first container slightly higher than it comes out of it for overflow to occur. We insert the pipe and fill the edges of the hole with crushed stone and sand. This must be done very carefully so as not to damage the structure. The places where the tire sewer pit connects to the pipes are well sealed.

The last step in creating a septic tank from tires with your own hands will be to secure the lid from a material that is not subject to rotting or damage. Thick plastic is best.

  • It is better to place the sewage system in a private house made of tires on the leeward side of the house. This simple trick will allow you to protect yourself from “enjoying” unpleasant odors coming from under the sewer cover.
  • In order not to worry about overcrowding of the drain, it is better to initially install tires with the largest possible diameter and in the amount of 5-7 pieces. In this case, even if three people live permanently in the house, the volume of the septic tank will be sufficient.
  • While digging holes for each of the tanks, it is necessary to periodically check the diameter with one tire so as not to gradually narrow.
  • When excavating, it is most convenient to use two different shovels with long handles. The bayonet type is designed for loosening the earth, and the scoop type is for removing loosened soil from the hole.
  • A tire septic tank can be connected not only to sewer lines from the house, but also from an outdoor washbasin or outdoor shower.
  • The inner rim of tires must be cut off so that unprocessed dirt and debris do not accumulate in the curves.
  • It is best to use plastic “clamps” to secure tires. They are not prone to moisture damage and are fairly easy to attach.
  • The ventilation pipe should rise slightly above the septic tank lid (at least 60 cm). The closer the tanks are to residential buildings, the higher the pipe should be.
  • For convenience, you can make an inspection window in the lid of the septic tank and cover it with a piece of thick rubber. This will make it much easier to control how full the containers are.
  • To insulate a septic tank, before filling with sand or crushed stone, tires can be wrapped in roofing felt or thick polyethylene. The same technique is used if there is even the slightest risk of untreated wastewater getting into groundwater.
  • Experienced owners recommend planting some kind of moisture-loving tree near the tanks: weeping willow, alder or broom. The plant will absorb all excess water.

  • A tire sedimentation tank is only suitable for areas where the soil does not freeze deeply. This condition allows you to avoid heaving of the earth during thawing or during the rainy season, and will protect the structure from destruction.
  • A tire septic tank can only be used to settle gray drains (soapy water from sinks, bathtubs and household appliances), and containing black drains (toilet waste) can lead to an unsafe situation in the event of leaks in such a structure.

If tires from large equipment are used, then it will be enough to use 3-4 pieces, and if for a passenger car, then their number increases to 5-7 pieces. It all depends on the required volume of chambers. If you have a large diameter steel pipe, you can use it instead of one of the compartments.

Step-by-step description of septic tank installation

Before installing tires, their rims must be trimmed with a jigsaw. Subsequently, this will make it easier to clean the septic tank and ensure unhindered flow of water from their internal walls.


The septic tank is installed as follows:
  1. Communications supply . A sewer pipe needs to be removed from the house under the foundation. First, a narrow, shallow ditch is manually dug out, and it is laid at the bottom at a certain slope. To prevent the pipe from freezing and suffering from mechanical damage, it must be insulated and then covered with a box on top.
  2. Performing markup . To understand what size a pit needs to be dug, it is necessary to place a tire on the surface of the proposed septic tank, intended for laying in the right chamber, and indicate its diameter. Then you should retreat a short distance (up to half a meter) and attach the tire for the second chamber, and also circle it. Depending on the number of compartments, mark out the area required to complete the entire septic tank.
  3. Digging a pit and cameras . There are two options: in the first case, a square hole is dug using tractor equipment, and in its bottom, recesses are made for the tires. The second option involves digging the required diameters directly on the soil surface. All holes for tires are made manually, using shovels: a bayonet shovel breaks and loosens the soil, and a shovel with a pointed end removes it from the resulting recess. After digging a pit, a lot of fertile soil will remain, which can be transferred to the garden or beds. A small part of it will be needed to fill the septic tank on top.
  4. Drilling a drainage well . When all the holes have been dug to the required depth, you need to drill a hole in their bottom with a garden drill. A pipe is installed in it, the end of which should be 1 meter above the bottom of the pit. This distance is necessary to prevent large waste particles from getting into it. Holes are made in the body of the pipe, through which water will drain. To protect the holes made and the top of the pipe, polypropylene mesh is used. A drainage pipe is needed to conduct water through all layers of soil and prevent it from stagnating inside septic tanks.
  5. Making a drainage layer . A layer of crushed stone approximately 10 cm thick is poured into the bottom of the resulting pit under the tires.
  6. Tire installation . The tires are laid on fine crushed stone, which fills the bottom of the pits. They are located coaxially one above the other. The joints of 2 nearby tires are sealed with sealant, which acts as an insulating layer. To ensure reliable fastening, you can make several small holes in the walls of the tires and thread a wire into them, which can provide a strong connection. The resulting voids between the tires and the pit are filled with earth or sand. In some cases, they are filled with cement mortar. The height of the tires must be calculated so that the topmost tire protrudes slightly above ground level.
  7. Pipe routing . Before laying the top rail of the first well, use a jigsaw to make a hole into which the inlet pipe will be inserted. You also need to make holes in the tires located 2/3 above the bottom of the pit. Connecting pipes will be installed in them, through which liquid will flow from one chamber to the adjacent one.
  8. Installation of hatches . The top of the resulting wells should be covered with a plastic or polymer lid. As a last resort, you need to make a wooden analogue and wrap it in roofing felt. It is permissible to seal the first chamber altogether, but only change the hatch once a year and check its sealing.

The principle of operation of a finished septic tank

After going through all the steps described, you can become the owner of a reliable and economical septic tank. quite simple:
  • Wastewater, discharged through a sewer pipe from the house, enters the first settling tank, where partial drainage occurs. Here it is partially freed from heavy substances.
  • After filling most of the chamber volume, the wastewater begins to flow through the connecting pipe into the adjacent sump. There they are processed and seep into the ground. Thanks to the putrefactive bacteria found there, they are perfectly absorbed by the soil.
  • If there is another chamber, then when the second sump is filled, excess settled water flows into it. The flow process is repeated depending on the number of chambers.


The more chambers, the purer the water that comes out. After the fourth well, it can be used for construction purposes and watered the garden.

Design

The septic tank in question consists of 4 wells, 3 of which are made from old tires. The fourth well is a pipe with a diameter of about a meter. All wells are buried in the ground, and a monolithic slab will be poured on top of them and covered with soil.

Each septic tank is 4 meters deep. The wells will be connected to each other by a common plastic pipe. In each of them there will be a buried pipe coming from it. It is best to deepen it into a well to a length of more than 100 cm, since if its size is small, water will only be taken from the top layer, and various inclusions can float on it. The principle of operation of such a septic tank is the gradual purification of water. As it flows from one well to another, it becomes cleaner.

Pipe laying

The total volume of such a septic tank, taking into account that 3 wells are made of standard car tires, is approximately equal to 14 cubic meters. To remove sewerage from the house, an NPD pipe (“low-density polyethylene”) with a wall thickness of 6 mm is used. When working with such a pipe, you need to take into account that it is uneven, as it comes in rolls. During its installation, in order to avoid counter-slopes, you need to clearly make a slope from the house to the septic tank, tighten the thread and maintain the same distance between it and the pipe. The planes need to be checked using the axis rule, after which you can backfill the passed section, compact it and lay the next section of the pipe.

The pit for the septic tank in question was dug by a tractor. The pit turned out to be 4.5 x 1.0 x 5.2 meters in size.

A septic tank made from old tires is an excellent option for those who want to solve their sewerage problems. But such a device, due to the unreliability of the material, has a limited service life - no more than 15 years. It is advisable to check the tightness of tire connections every six months; in case of leaks, they must be completely replaced, since they cannot be repaired. To eliminate the unpleasant odors emanating from such a septic tank, you need to restore the ventilation pipe.
