Art painting on glass. DIY glass painting for beginners and experienced decorators. Cost of painting on glass with acrylic paints

Stained glass designs are certainly capable of adding unique aesthetics to any glass surface. Surreal animals, geometric patterns, fairy-tale characters and other equally fantastic ornaments will enliven your windows, doors or even just glasses. And the most amazing thing is that painting on glass with stained glass paints is available to anyone who has enough desire for it.

In this article we will analyze the main points of this painstaking but completely feasible task.

Choosing the right paint

By and large, stained glass paints are divided into two directions: those that have H 2 O as their base, and those whose main component is an artificially produced solvent. When working indoors, it is certainly better to focus on environmentally friendly suspensions.

Of these, the best choice would be acrylic mixtures, which have many advantages:

  • Ease of use. You can apply stained glass on glass with your own hands using acrylic paints even without any special training.

  • Affordable price. There is no use of expensive raw materials in their production.
  • High strength and water resistance.
  • Ecological cleanliness and absence of unpleasant odors. During the hardening process, only water vapor is released, which allows you to work with such paints even indoors.
  • No need for dilution with solvent. If you need to increase the amount of solution, it will be enough to add water to it.

Advice: the mixture should be stirred only if in the future the pattern will not come into contact with H 2 O or will be covered with varnish on top.
Since the moisture-resistant qualities are significantly reduced.

  • Wide range of possible colors. Moreover, you can always achieve a rarer shade by combining existing colors.

If the structure of the structure that you plan to paint contains iron elements, then the following mixtures are suitable for covering them:

  • Electrically conductive paint Zinga perfectly protects against the occurrence and spread of corrosive processes.
  • Fire-retardant paints for metal Polistil enhance fire safety throughout the entire room.

Necessary tools and materials used

You should first prepare thoroughly, providing yourself with everything you need.

Coloring solutions

Stained glass paint for glass, using acrylates as a binder, is best suited, as we have already determined above.

And when purchasing it, you should consider the following nuances:

  • The jar must have a special symbol indicating that the solution is suitable for treating ceramic and glass surfaces.
  • The kits cost 10-15 percent less than single samples. Be economical and choose the combination that is best for you.

  • Availability of a heated warehouse in the store. Since the presence of water makes these mixtures very vulnerable to frost during storage, and improperly stored samples can simply be spoiled.
  • The expiration date must be appropriate. Old suspensions tend to dry out quickly during use.

Outlines

Glass has an incredibly smooth surface, as a result of which paint applied to it tends to bleed. To avoid this, contours are used, which can also be called “contour paste” or “outliner paint”. With their help, borders of drawings and various decorative effects are created.

Brushes

Stained glass paints are paints for glass that contain acrylic. Therefore, brushes with synthetic soft bristles are best suited for their use.

In the process you will need them in different proportions:

  • Round and thin - applies small strokes, details the drawing, emphasizes the final sketches.
  • Flat and medium – fills large areas, covers the work with a protective layer of varnish solution.

Tip: Do not leave brushes soaked in paint for a long time; wash them or immerse them in water.
Otherwise, they will quickly become unusable, and you will have to buy new tools.

It is also advisable to have a separate tool for each color you use.

Varnish

You should immediately take into account that the paint used is quite resistant to environmental influences, and therefore varnishing is not a necessary process. But still, additional protection and giving never hurts. So it is advisable to finish the job by applying a coat of varnish

Additional materials

In addition to the most important tools and materials listed above, before painting with stained glass paints on glass, prepare:

  • A jar of water for washing brushes.

  • A rag for wiping tools, hands and removing fresh paint from places where it shouldn’t be.
  • Palette for mixing different colors. This could be a saucer, a plastic lid or any other similar container.

  • Stencil with a pattern. Useful for producing high-quality images without special artistic talents.

Painting works

Now let's directly look at how to paint with stained glass paints on glass.

Instructions:

  1. Degrease the glass to be treated with an alcohol solution.
  2. We create the ornament lines using the contour. We eliminate any defects immediately with a rag or after hardening with a sharp knife.

  1. We wait half an hour for the outliner paint to dry completely, or we dry it with a hairdryer to speed up the process.
  2. Using brushes, fill in all the elements of the picture. In this case, you should monitor the amount of paint applied so that there is not too much or too little.

  1. We let the image dry for forty-eight hours, and then we open it with varnish. Alternatively, if the dimensions of the processed structure allow, you can bake the product in the oven, which will also significantly increase the strength qualities of the design.

Conclusion

Stained glass paints allow you to transform ordinary glass products into beautiful, unique works of art. At the same time, even a person far from art can cope with the process itself, strictly following the recommendations given.

The video in this article will provide you with additional information.

Be careful and you will succeed!

You will need

  • - Relief stamps;
  • - synthetic brushes;
  • - contours on glass;
  • - acrylic paints;
  • - palette;
  • - acrylic lacquer;
  • - solvent;
  • - cotton pads.

Instructions

First you need to choose drawing for application to glass. Of course, you can invent drawing in the process of painting, but not everyone is good at it. For such cases, there are special relief stamps on sale, drawing from which you can transfer to glass. You can do it differently. Select drawing(you can do it on the Internet), process it so that only the outline remains, print it out and apply it to the glass on the opposite side of the one on which you will draw. Then lightly wet the paper so it sticks to the glass. You can start painting. Don’t forget to pre-wipe the surface to be painted with alcohol to remove greasy fingerprints and other contaminants.

Drawings can be applied to glass using special contours or without them. Glass contours, like paints, come in different colors, are usually packaged in tubes and are used to create glass painting using stained glass techniques. Thicker contours than paints prevent acrylic from mixing and spreading, but they are quite difficult to apply and require practice. The contour must be applied by lightly squeezing the tube and rather quickly moving its “nose” along the surface in the direction you need. The speed and pressure must be the same throughout the line, or you will end up with an uneven outline. Small unevenness can be corrected using a cotton swab dipped in water.

Then take a synthetic brush in the shape of a cone. The finer the details of the drawing that need to be painted, the thinner the brush should be. Apply drawing There are two main techniques for working on glass. The first technique is more suitable for transparent (stained glass) paints, but opaque acrylic paints can also be applied this way. To make acrylic paints go on smoothly, put more color on the brush and, lightly touching the glass, pull the paint little by little to the sides, evenly distributing it over the surface in a not too thin layer. As soon as the paint stops flowing freely from the brush, pick it up again. Do this often and quickly so as not to let the edges of the painted area dry out, otherwise you will end up with unsightly streaks. The brush should not touch the same place twice; acrylic paints are applied in this technique only once.

If you are going to paint on glass with alkyd paints, then the application technique will be the same. For your information, acrylic paints based on alkyd resins, unlike paints based on, spread better and do not require baking, but have a pungent odor and can only be washed off with a solvent. The second application technique resembles the usual one on paper. To paint on glass using this technique you will need opaque acrylic paints. Usually in this technique. In this case, broad strokes are made. In this technique, you can apply one layer of paint on top of another, but the first layer must have time to dry.

After you apply drawing onto the glass, let it dry. The complete drying time is usually indicated in the instructions for the paints. Most water-based paints require baking. Products painted with water-based acrylic paints can be baked in the oven at the temperature specified in the instructions. The finishing touch that will secure the results of your work is coating with acrylic varnish. It is advisable to coat with acrylic varnish both products painted with alkyd paints and products decorated with water-based paints.

A few little secrets. If you want to add texture to your drawing, use a hard brush. It will leave grooves that will make the surface uneven when dry. You can also use a foam sponge for this. Dip the sponge into the paint and apply the paint to the surface using patting movements. If you don't have the color you want, you can try to get it by mixing existing shades. If you need to paint a large surface (make a background), use spray acrylic paint.

The art of glass painting dates back to the glorious times of the Renaissance. From generation to generation, the masters of that time passed on the secret of using metals and their oxides instead of the usual paints. Today, the chemical industry is so developed that it makes it possible to expand the range of materials suitable for glass painting. The lower price of paints than before and the technique of painting using stencils have simplified the technology and made it much more accessible.

The most popular material for painting on glass is acrylic paints, recognized by professionals and amateurs alike; they provide the opportunity to independently create unique things. It is with them that we will learn to work.

Let's ask ourselves what painting on glass with acrylic paints is, how easy it is to learn this technique, and what we need to decorate windows, mirrors, bottles in this way - in a word, any glass surface.

So, let's prepare acrylic paints, acrylic varnish, and regular brushes of different thicknesses. Don’t forget about cotton swabs and toothpicks, they will come in handy for correcting images, as well as multi-colored outlines (contact “Stationery” or specialty stores with goods for arts and crafts) and a special composition for diluting acrylic paints. It will serve for thick paints, however, in many cases it can be successfully replaced with ordinary water. To mix different shades, prepare a palette.

How to prepare glass

Before painting glass with acrylic paints, clean your work surface. Suppose we are going to paint a bottle, but there is a label on it, what should we do? In hot water it will come off in a quarter of an hour, maximum in 20 minutes. We get rid of glue residues, if any are still present, using an iron brush (an abrasive cleaner will have the same effect). We complete the preparation by degreasing the glass using alcohol (nail polish remover will also work). All that's left to do is dry it and you can paint it.

Where to start drawing on glass?

First of all, we decide which image we like and figure out how to place it more beautifully on the surface. Next, we transfer the drawing to the glass using one of two methods.

Take a thin marker and apply the image to the glass surface. True, this requires a faithful hand and thorough artistic abilities, which, you see, not everyone has. So it’s better, especially while we’re getting the hang of it, to do the following: place the drawing slightly moistened with water under a transparent work surface and carefully trace it using an outline (this is a special paint in a tube, it has a long thin spout with a hole at the end) or a marker .

If you choose to work on an outline, do not press too hard, otherwise too much paint will be squeezed out. At first you are unlikely to get a straight line, don’t worry, all unevenness can be corrected with cotton swabs or toothpicks. So, the contour is applied, leave it to dry for a couple of hours.

There is one subtlety that is worth knowing about. The contour will make the image clearer, but at the same time less “live” and stained glass. So there is a reason to transfer the drawing in rough form, for example, with the same marker, and then work on it with acrylic paints, then the image will really sparkle and come to life.

Painting on glass with acrylic paints: creating a picture

Let's move on to the most interesting and exciting stage - painting with acrylic paints on glass, coloring the rough sketch. After finishing the work, let it dry (how long is written in the instructions on the package or jar, usually about 10 minutes).

However, there are acrylic paints that need to be baked in the oven, and not just dried. We find out the temperature required for this from the annotation.

And some more useful tips:

  • You need to paint with acrylic paints on glass in layers, waiting for each one to dry;
  • acrylic paints will lie more evenly if you scoop them up with a larger brush and, lightly moving it over the glass, distribute it over the entire surface, achieving an even and thin layer. The speed of application is important here in order to prevent the edges of the painted area from drying out. Otherwise, ugly divorces cannot be avoided;
  • a more textured pattern with raised grooves will be obtained by using a foam sponge or a brush with stiff bristles;
  • don’t be afraid to experiment with different shades, mix colors;
  • you can cover a large area of the surface using aerosol acrylic paint;
  • Don't forget about safety precautions! If your acrylic paints contain alkyd resins, you must thoroughly ventilate the premises or use a respirator;
  • when the work is completed, wash the brushes, otherwise the bristles may become damaged and the brush will have to be thrown away;
  • After applying drawings with acrylic paints to glass, cover them with a special acrylic varnish, and they will last much longer.
So, we have become acquainted with the basic principles of drawing images with acrylic paints on glass, it’s time to put the acquired theoretical knowledge into practice, creating our first masterpieces. Good luck to you in this endeavor!

Dear friends, subscribers and blog visitors!

In my creative activity I use almost all known techniques painting on glass with stained glass paints. Don’t be surprised, it’s not difficult, because there are not so many of these techniques: contour, non-contour and multi-layer.

Sometimes dot painting on glass is also used.- this is perhaps the only basic technique that can be combined both with stained glass painting and separately as a technique point-to-point on other surfaces

The most amazing moments in the life of an artist are the moments of creating works... on glass, canvas or wood

Let's take a closer look at these techniques today. and let’s figure out what the specifics of each of them are and what opportunities they open up for artists. You will see that due to the effects obtained when using each technique, you can create completely different stained glass paintings with the same paints.

Let's start with the most common...

Contour painting technique

Its essence lies in the fact that first a contour painting is done on the glass., a sketch of the work is created, and then the spaces between the contours are filled with paints, as a result of which a painting is born.

The drawing is outlined with a relief outline, preferably from the same company that makes stained glass paints. If the surface is large enough, stained glass lead tape is used, which plays the same role as the outline - it does not allow the stained glass paint to mix and strictly adhere to a certain place.

Examples of masters in stained glass painting using contour

This is a matter of your taste... If you want to make the divisions in the drawing wider and similar to those in a real stained glass window, then choose stained glass lead tape. If you want your work to be airy and light, choose a contour in a tube.

The height of the outline depends on how much you plan to pour paint onto glass. But the denser the paint, the less transparent it is.

Advice: Stained glass paints are an amazing material; you can use it to create colorful works, and not only on glass. Practice on small pieces of glass with different densities of paint on the glass using different height outlines…. Perhaps you will discover something new for yourself!

In principle, all life is built on experiments. Experiment and live life to the fullest. And as Aristotle correctly noted: “Living means doing things, not acquiring them!”

You can get your hands on stained glass painting on small glasses, plates and vases

Advantages of this technique: the opportunity to see a sketch of the painting before filling it with colors, a certain schematic nature that allows you to break the process into separate stages, a characteristic “stained glass” appearance of the final work.

In general, this is a technique for curious people. It is best to use varnish stained glass paints to create beautiful paintings using the non-contour technique; they open up more opportunities in the world of stained glass painting.

By the way, these two techniques can be combined. For example, inside a large element in an outline you can make a pattern in a non-outline manner. And of course, flowers turn out especially beautiful when the spreading of stained glass paints creates amazing patterns inside the flower!

In a master class on painting a glass table, I show all the nuances of such work. The photo below clearly shows how beautiful spreading is created in this way.

You can purchase on a special page with a significant discount. Also in this lesson I additionally show the technique of gilding with gold leaf, since gilding complements this work.

As is known, hand made a special type of creativity and it is popular all over the world. A huge number of people They love to decorate the interior with their own hands.

Multilayer technique

The essence of this drawing technique is clear from its name: The paints are applied in several layers. Moreover, depending on what effect the artist wants to achieve, the bottom layer (or several layers) can be either completely dry or of varying degrees of dampness, so that they are mixed with the layer applied above.

This technique allows you to create the most realistic images using stained glass paints, with its help you can even convey shadows and play of light. This technique requires a lot of attention and patience.

Water-based stained glass paints are best suited for this technique. Although, if you practice enough, you can achieve good results with varnish stained glass paints.

A small (varnish) will help you make the right choice when purchasing.

Here, look at the example of the work of one master of stained glass painting, where you can clearly see the transitions of light and shadow on the boy’s face and on the bodies of the angels.

Examples of stained glass multilayer technique

Consistency in work and accuracy are important here... If errors appear, it will be difficult to correct them. And I repeat again - try, experiment! After all, nothing is impossible - anyone can master such a subtle technique... the main thing here is desire!

Spot painting on glass

Again, the name of this technique also speaks for itself. The image is formed by a set of dots made by contours, and its color and saturation can be varied not only by color, but also by the density of the dots, and the shades change, including when dots of different colors are placed next to each other.

The labor intensity of painting in these techniques is approximately equal. This methodical technique is not only used on glass and ceramics. Using this technique, they decorate everything and on any surface... from covers to clothes.

Spot painting on glass and ceramics is very popular in the world and is in great demand

Do you like paintings made with stained glass paints? If you want to try to write something surprising and unusual, but don’t know how to approach this technique, don’t worry. We all started somewhere.

Painting on glass “Girl playing with a cat on the windowsill”

At one time, I wrote down in which I showed and told in detail, clearly and step by step how to create a stained glass picture, even if you are doing it for the first time.

Moreover, the master class is based on working with professional solvent paints, and after it you will know exactly how to write real works. In the lesson I used the basic contour technique, but there are moments in the picture in which non-contour and dot techniques are present.

And as the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras said:“Give every day a chance to become the most beautiful day of your life!”

So if you are interested, go ahead and watch - the master class was recorded especially for you!

Also, if you already paint glass products, you can try your hand at a new technique - stained glass paints on an acrylic background on canvas. Free video lesson This is a new direction in mixed media that is winning the love of many people.

Nowadays, stained glass is glass painting. In this article we will give a master class on painting at home. In earlier times, craftsmen who decorated buildings, houses, churches and other structures created stained glass windows using pieces of colored glass. The light in the temples passing through such a stained glass window created an atmosphere of mystery and reverence.

Today we can create stained glass ourselves using stained glass paints.

With the help of stained glass paints we can paint glass jars used for spices or cereals, painted glass bottles will add personality to the interior, a painted glass decanter for water or juice will delight you with its colorfulness, painted flowers or butterflies on an interior door, window or mirror will give good mood.

Painting on glass with stained glass paints can help when choosing a gift for family and friends. For example, by painting a set of glasses, you will save on an exclusive gift. You won’t find such a gift in stores; it is made with your own hands and is individual.

Classification of stained glass paints

Stained glass paints are divided into two main groups:

  1. Water based paints– acrylic, washes off well with water and most often requires firing to fix. After such manipulations, the painted product can be easily washed, even with cleaning agents; this will not harm the paint.

Such paints are environmentally friendly and practically odorless; for these qualities, they are also well suited for children's creativity. They are more liquid and transparent, transmitting light well.

  1. Organic solvent based paints– alkyd, can be either alcohol-based or varnish-based. Such paints do not require firing; they are thicker and more matte. They hold up well and can be wiped with a damp cloth or rinsed.

But such paints are not suitable for everyone - they have a strong pungent odor, so children and people with allergies should not work with them. In a well-ventilated area, working with such paints will not cause harm.

Everyone chooses for themselves which colors they will use. Acrylic – do not smell, are brighter, do not require special cleaners. But when applied, the paint may lie unevenly or require several strokes.

Alkyds have a strong smell, are thick and matte. But when applied, they spread smoothly over the surface and can even hide unevenness and roughness of the surface of the product.

Types of stained glass paints for decoration

Stained glass paints can not only be used to paint glass surfaces; they can also be used to create paintings and other works of art. For sophisticated craftsmen, there is a choice of stained glass paint textures not only based on their base.

Drawings for painting on glass with stained glass paints can be made using the following materials:

  • Silicate- the most common, they are made by melting dye and flux, which produces transparent or matte paints.
  • Chandelier– due to the presence of metal oxides in the paint, this paint has metallic or pearlescent colors. It is quite liquid, so it is used after applying a contour first so that the liquid does not spread and does not mix with other colors.
  • Foaming– when fired, such paint swells and peels off a little, resulting in a three-dimensional relief pattern.
  • Icy– or granular; when fired, the granules spread and the pattern appears in the form of pimples. Before applying them, drying oil or special glue is applied to the surface for better adhesion of the paint to the glass.
  • Matting– used to give glass a matte finish, usually used for large surfaces where paints are mixed with each other or for stencil painting. A day after painting, the product is fired to fix the paint.
  • Marbled– usually two colors are used, the second is applied before the first has dried. Then, using a brush or sponge, they are mixed, depending on what we want to see in the end. Plain marble can be obtained by dropping a little water on the surface, adding transparent paint to the water, and then adding the desired color on top.
  • Craquelure– used to create antique stained glass; this paint together with acrylic varnish gives a cracking effect.
  • Pearl- paint that creates pearls. The pearl is squeezed onto the surface to the required size, then rounded. After a day it dries completely.
  • Patterned– it is liquid, based on water and alkyd resins. When using it, a drop of water is first applied to the required surface, paint of one or two colors is applied to the water, then stirred with a brush or stick. You can use a cocktail straw to blow out your own design.

Advice! If you are creating a stained glass window for the first time, you should start with ordinary stained glass paints, without any effects and without firing.

Drawing stained glass on glass

In order for the work not to be interrupted and the mood not to deteriorate, we will prepare in advance everything that we will need in the process of creating a stained glass window:

  • Of course, stained glass paints. For the first time, it is worth taking paints that are not suitable for firing. For better fixation, you can use varnish.
  • Acrylic lacquer. It will make our painting not only glossy, but also more wear-resistant. In addition, the product can be easily washed with water.
  • A contour for drawing with stained glass paints, usually sold together with paints, or in the same department.
  • Tapered brushes. This is if the paint is in jars and without attachments, or if it needs to be corrected somewhere.
  • A palette if you plan to mix several colors. But for the first time, you should choose a simpler drawing.
  • A stencil with a design or pattern. Stencils for painting with stained glass paints on glass are sold in the same place where the paint is sold.
  • A marker to transfer the stencil design onto the glass.
  • Glass or glass product. Glass for painting with stained glass paints is sold in stores where the paint is available, in different shapes and sizes.
  • Alcohol or acetone, whatever you have on hand, to wipe off excess paint and correct uneven spots.
  • Cotton swabs and toothpicks or a needle. They are convenient for removing excess paint and correcting the outline.
  • A rag to wipe off your brushes before dipping them back into the paint.
  • Solvent for paints. It is necessary only for these paints; a solvent from another company or for other paints can ruin our paints.

When all the tools and materials are ready, we need to cover the surface on which we are going to create our masterpiece and get to work.

Glass painting technique

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to paint a glass surface with stained glass paints using irises as an example:

Advice! It is best to place white paper or whatman paper under the glass, this will make it easier to draw and you will see what shades of paint are needed.

So:

  • We degrease the glass using any detergent, alcohol or acetone, so that the paint adheres better to the surface.
  • Place the stencil on the glass and trace the design with a marker. We won't need the stencil anymore.
  • We draw an outline. It is better to move from the center to the edges, without rushing. We try to squeeze out the contour evenly and not leave gaps.
  • The contour must dry thoroughly; its drying time is usually indicated on the tube. The main thing is not to rush, you can start coloring the next day.
  • The most interesting thing is the filling of stained glass fragments. We also do this in stages, moving from the core of the picture.
  • We choose a paint color and paint all the fragments of this color. For light shades, mix paints on the palette to the desired color.
  • When the flowers are ready, we proceed to the background between them. As planned, it is matte-transparent, for this it is better to use varnish. It dries quite quickly.
  • Let's move on to the frame - the pebbles. We paint smaller stones with a smaller brush, larger ones with a larger brush.
    Now all you have to do is wait for the stained glass to dry, it depends on the paint, the drying time is indicated on the packaging.

Our stained glass picture is ready, all that remains is to place it in a frame and find its rightful place.

Conclusion

Now we know how and with what stained glass paints you can create your own stained glass masterpieces, feeling like real artists. You can use your stained glass paintings not only on plain glass, but also on dishes, windows and mirrors.

By decorating a glass cup with an individual pattern, you can give it to family or friends. They will not only like its decorative appearance, but will also be flattered by the attention and care paid to it. Moreover, such a gift will cost much less than a purchased exclusive, since the price of paints is affordable to anyone.

In the video in this article we can watch a master class on painting glass with stained glass paints.
