Unpacking an office (computer) chair.
When unpacking the chair, you must carefully inspect all parts of the product for scratches, torn surfaces and other defects. If surface defects are found, you must contact the store and decide whether to replace this part or the entire chair. If everything is fine with the chair, then you can proceed to the next stage: assembling it. Keep the packaging until assembly is completed.
Assembling an office (computer) chair.
We take out the cross base and insert the wheels into it. Usually the wheels are inserted manually (see figure),
you just need to press harder. If this does not work, then place the crosspiece on a flat surface and, gently tapping the wheel with a hammer, try to drive it into the bushing of the crosspiece. The blow must be struck between the two spheres of the wheel. Be careful, the plastic may crack.
Insert the gas cartridge (gas lift) into the hole in the center of the cross (see figure).
Then put a decorative casing on the gas cartridge, if available.(see figure) .
Now you can begin installing the armrests (see figure).
Typically, armrests are secured with three screws (two short and one long). If the fastening part of the armrest is made of metal, then it is necessary to install locking washers on the screws so that the armrests do not become loose in the future. If the armrest is entirely made of plastic, then the groovers are not necessary, because When tightening the screws, they go deeper into the plastic and are thereby reliably protected from loosening.
First, you need to tighten all the screws so that they fit neatly into the threads and subsequently there are no problems with tightening other screws. If you knock off the threads, it will be quite difficult to screw the armrests normally. And during use of such a chair, the armrest can quickly deteriorate.
Insert the corner into the seat mechanism (see figure) and fasten it with a large screw (lamb).
After this, we put the seat base on gas cartridge (see figure).
We put the backrest on the corner and fasten it with a smaller screw.(see figure) .
Checking the functionality of an office (computer) chair.
Sit on the chair and pull the lever up, which should be under the seat on the right side. In this case, the weight of the chair should lower. Then stand up and pull the lever up again, the chair should rise. If nothing happens when you press the lever, the reason may be the following (remove the seat and check):
– there may be a protective cap on the gas cartridge button – just remove it (this happens rarely and on imported chairs);
– perhaps the lever (see figure) is bent and does not hit the gas cartridge button when pressed – try to carefully straighten it;
– the seat does not fit tightly on the gas cartridge and when you press the lever it does not reach the button – jump on the seat or ask a more well-fed person to sit on the chair;
– the gas cartridge is faulty - try pressing the gas cartridge button with your hand (in order for it to go down, you need to apply considerable force).

Install the rollers into the slots

First, install the rollers into the crosspiece - to do this, insert them with the rods into the holes on the lower surface of the crosspiece and press firmly until they click. You can use a rubber mallet, but it is not recommended to hit the plastic parts of the parts too hard.

Remove the protective caps from the ends of the gas lift and insert it with its base into the upper central hole of the cross. Assemble the casing - it is often made of several parts connected according to the principle of a telescopic pipe and put it on the gas lift. Insert it into the center hole of the cross. You have assembled the load-bearing part.
Place the seat on the gas lift rod and press firmly or sit on it - this is necessary for a strong fixation to occur.

A modern office chair is a functional and comfortable piece of furniture, equipped with a rather complex mechanism that sooner or later fails. In such a situation, there are three options for the development of events: purchase a new one, take it to a specialized workshop, or repair the office chair yourself.
As practice has shown, it is quite possible to carry out such work on your own. The only thing that is required from the master is strict adherence to the sequence of actions and implementation of the instructions that will be given in this publication.
Today, there are three types of chairs on the office furniture market:
- For the manager
Such a piece of furniture usually has maximum capabilities: a five-beam steel cross; synchronization mechanism (a device that forces the seat and backrest to repeat the movements of the owner); mechanisms for adjusting backrest resistance, seat depth, negative tilt, etc. - For staff
Furniture of this type has more modest characteristics and functionality. Most varieties are lightweight (ensuring high mobility) and are equipped with mechanisms for adjusting seat height, armrests, and back angle. - For visitors
Office chairs of this modification are simply beautiful, stable and comfortable furniture, devoid of any functionality. Often they do not even have a rotation mechanism and are produced on four legs, instead of one supporting leg with a cross on wheels.
Design features
Despite the variability of designs and functional content, almost all chairs consist of one set of elements:
- Five-beam cross(base). This part is made of metal or plastic. The first option is better quality and more expensive
- Rollers. Just like the crosspiece, the wheels can be made of metal or plastic. However, the mount and internal hinge of any roller are metal
- Pneumatic cartridge(gas elevator). The part serves as the leg of the chair and is responsible for its “elasticity”
- Rocking mechanism contributes to the axial deviation of the chair and its fixation in one position. On expensive models, a mechanism with an offset axis is installed, ensuring the smoothest swing possible.
- Piastra. This element is a metal platform with a lever. Serves to change the height of the seat relative to the cross
- Permanent contact– an element that connects the backrest to the seat and is responsible for changes in its position
Most office chair models have armrests. In cheap models, these elements are made of plastic; in more expensive ones - made of anodized or stainless steel.
Common breakdowns
As noted above, an office chair is a rather complex device and any of its structural elements can fail.
Damage to the cross
The problem with this element may be destruction at the junction of the beams. The material from which the cross is made is important here.
As a rule, the base is a hollow structure into which a polypropylene pipe of suitable size and cross-section can be inserted. It, in turn, must be rigidly fixed to the base and the damaged beam.
Plastic parts cannot be spliced using glue or a soldering iron. due to heavy loads on the paws. There is no point in restoring the integrity of this element. The best option would be to completely replace the damaged structure with a glass-filled polyamide base.
In order to dismantle the crosspiece of an office chair, you need:
- Remove rollers. As a rule, they do not have a rigid fixation and are quite simply removed from the mounting sockets. To illustrate the process, it is recommended to watch the video:
- Dismantle the piastra. Fastening to the seat is done “on a cone”. Disconnection from the gas elevator is carried out by tapping on the attachment point. The correct process for disassembling an office chair is shown in the video:
- Remove the retaining clip, located in the recess of the upper part of the hydraulic elevator.
- Knock out the gas lift for repair or replacement of the five-beam.
Note! In case of critical damage or destruction, it is impossible to knock the gas elevator out of the base. In this case, you should remove the working cylinder with the seal and bearing from the “glass”.

Destruction of the swing mechanism
If the chair does not hold the “horizon”, then the problem is most likely in the destruction of the swing mechanism.
Fastening to the seat is done with four screws using a shaped screwdriver. The element is dismantled as follows:
- The bolts that secure the rocking mechanism from the seat are unscrewed
- The gas lift is knocked out of the device mount.
This element is made of metal.
You can independently solve the problem of a collapsed device by completely replacing it (recommended) or using a welding machine.
It should be noted that most chairs originating from the Middle Kingdom are not suitable for domestic spare parts. This concerns, first of all, the swing mechanisms (size discrepancy).
- Chinese mechanisms: 200 x 200 mm.
- Domestic: 200 x 150 mm.

Air chuck failure
The pneumatic cartridge of the chair is a two-chamber structure filled with air. When you press the adjustment lever, the valve stops the flow of air between the chambers.
If, when pressing on the valve, the gas lift rod does not extend, it means that the integrity of the piston, seal, etc. is compromised.
It is important to know! Gas lift cannot be disassembled. If damaged, a complete replacement of the element is required

A fairly common cause of gas lift failure is the bending of the adjustment lever, which does not allow pressing on the cartridge valve. In this case, the repair can be easily carried out independently: you need to bend the lever to its original state.

- you need to find a cross. Usually it has from 4 to 6 blades, but sometimes there are 8. It turns over and lays on the box. The surface must be soft, because you will have to apply force to get the roller into place (you need to press until it clicks). If the roller does not go, then there is no need to increase the pressure, and most likely there is a groove in the design so that it can simply be loaded without a click. Thus, you need to install all the rollers - with a full hand, each one takes no more than 5-10 seconds;
- The shock absorber has the form of a tube and a synthetic enveloping material. The shock absorber is installed with the open tube facing up (towards the seat). During installation, minimal free play is possible (it will eliminate itself during operation), but it is better that it does not exist;
- the glass is going. Typically, the kit comes with 3 through cylinders, which fit into each other according to size. Alternatively, they can be put on the shock absorber in turn from smallest to largest. The function of the glasses is 90% visual and 10% safety (if something unexpected happens, there will be a chance to carefully get out of the chair without getting any injuries).
At this point, the supporting part is considered completed, and you can proceed to the chair itself. It’s already visually clear where the fulcrum will be and what to expect in the future, so the procedure is as follows:
- the seat is turned over with its “front” side on the box, and in the center of the base there is a platform for the mounting system. This system will ensure a reliable transition from the chair leg to the seat (it is advisable to purchase a metal base, but this is not always possible, so you need to carefully look at the quality of the plastic). All fastenings are made using screws, the number of which is from 4 to 8 (when applying the plate to the seat, the holes will match perfectly);
- the armrests will serve to connect the seat to the backrest. To install them, you just need to move the seat a little to the edge of the working surface and you can screw it on (if the assembly takes place on a box, you don’t even have to move it, because the dimensions of the box are specially made by the manufacturer for ease of assembly). To fix each armrest, 2-3 screws are provided;
- the entire resulting composition is moved to the edge of the box so that only 2/3 remains on the surface. The backrest is applied to the armrests from the inside, and fixed in the manner described above. At the same stage, it is imperative to check the quality of all threaded connections of the chair, because then such an opportunity will no longer arise;
- all visible places of bolted connections are closed with special plugs that match the color of the armrests. No tools are required here, but you will have to apply force (sometimes until it clicks - you need to look at the plugs).
Once the top and bottom parts have been assembled, they can be joined together. To do this, simply install the shock absorber into the tube (do not confuse it with a lever, because in some models this is possible - if you press the button too hard, it will press through, but this will be a reason to purchase a new chair).
