The high resistance of glass made it possible to bring it closer to the heating element (spiral) almost closely and thereby make the lamp as compact as possible (often no more than 10 mm thick).
  • The mirror-type coating of halogen lamps is carried out by spraying chemically pure aluminum (aluminum reflector) or a specialized translucent coating (interference reflector) onto a glass reflector.

Types of halogen lamps for ceiling lamps

Lamps can be inserted into halogen ceiling lamps either operating from a regular network with a voltage of 220V, or low-voltage lamps, for which the operating voltage is often 12V

As for operation in AC and DC power networks, any halogen lamp functions equally well in both cases.

If the lamp is designed to use low-voltage lamps, then when powering it, it is necessary to install a step-down transformer.

Let's look at what types of low-voltage halogen lamps are currently available on the market:

  • Capsule lamps with G4 and GY6.35 base.
  • Lamps with reflectors 35mm in diameter (bulb MR11, socket GU4), 51mm in diameter (MR16, GU5.3), diameters 48, 70, 111mm (GY4, B15d, G53, respectively).

Halogen ceiling lamps - recessed or attached under the ceiling - operating without a transformer, use the following types of lamps:

  • Halogen lamps of linear type with R7S socket.
  • Decorative lamps are cylindrical or candle-shaped with sockets E14, 27 and B15d.

  • Capsule halogen lamps with G9 base. Such lamps with a power of 35-40W are used in ceiling lamps, chandeliers, wall-ceiling lamps, backlights, floor lamps, sconces, and table lamps more often than any other.
  • Lamps equipped with a mirror reflector, with bulbs PAR16, 20, 30 and bases GZ10 (beveled), GU 10, E14 and 27.

Areas of application of various types of halogen lamps

Lamps with candle-shaped and cylindrical bulbs, used for insertion into halogen lamps and operating from normal mains voltage, serve as an excellent replacement for conventional incandescent lamps in virtually all areas, especially where modest dimensions are welcome (see).

Low-voltage halogen lamps have practically no alternative in the technique of accent lighting for museums, exhibitions, shopping malls, shop windows, restaurants, residential premises and other things.

If we talk in more detail about the use of halogen lamps in everyday life, then, as a rule, they are chandeliers and spotlights on halogen lamps.

Chandeliers with halogen lamps

Small capsule lamps are usually installed in a chandelier, about 2-3 cm in length. Lighting elements of this type are practically invisible between the crystal rhinestones of the chandelier or from its shades, so sometimes it is not even clear what exactly the light source is.

Chandeliers with halogen lamps may have some differences depending on the:

  1. shape and presence (or absence) of decorative elements;
  2. method of mounting to the ceiling - using a loop or mounting plate with holes for screws;
  3. type of sockets for installing lamps – G4; G9; GY6.35;
  4. the presence or absence in the design of a voltage-stepping transformer necessary to power low-voltage lamps.
  5. the presence or absence of a dimmer (brightness control) in the design

Features of choosing and using chandeliers with halogen lamps

When purchasing recessed halogen lamps such as chandeliers, you should take into account some of their features:

  • the lamps in such chandeliers tend to get very hot, so such lamps are better suited for installation in spacious rooms with high ceilings;
  • with rare exceptions, dimmers can only be used with chandeliers that do not use step-down transformers for lamps;
  • in practice, it has been established that the service life of halogen lamps is longer in those chandeliers whose design is supplemented with a step-down transformer;
  • It is not recommended to touch halogen lamps with bare hands, since traces of touch do not have the best effect on the service life of the lamps;

Advice! It is strictly forbidden to touch capsule halogen lamps with your hands or other objects during their operation, as this can cause severe burns and/or failure of the lighting element.

  • If the lamp in the chandelier burns out, you need to remove it from the socket, and then insert a lighting element (new and functional) with a similar base and the same supply voltage into the lamp.

Spotlights with halogen lamps

As a rule, recessed halogen lamps are installed in a suspended ceiling (see), after which only the decorative flange remains visible on the ceiling surface, as well as the lamp itself. The holding in the holes cut in the ceiling is carried out by means of two stop springs.

Like luminaires using conventional lamps, recessed halogen lamps can also be rotary, that is, with the ability to manually change the direction of the light flux; the only difference is that halogen lamps are significantly smaller in size.

As usual, sets of recessed spotlights are supplemented with ceramic sockets for halogen lamps - G4, GU3.5 or GU10.

For spotlights, reflective halogen lamps (or RHL) are used, the diameter of which is 35 or 51 mm.

There are RGLs with a cold glow: their light is reflected forward, about half of the heat emanating from the lamp is passed back to the rear of the lamp. For this reason, their glow is not so hot.

In recessed ceiling lamps, reflector lamps are inserted and fixed on a special decorative flange using a ring spring, and the lamp is connected to the electrical network by inserting two metal pins protruding from the base into the lamp socket.

Together with spotlights on reflective low-voltage halogen lamps, transformers must be used. The wires coming from the lamps are connected to them, and the wires of the transformer itself are connected to the home electrical network. During the installation of spotlights, both the transformers themselves and all the wires are hidden in the space between the main and suspended ceilings.

Advantages and rules for choosing spotlights for ceilings using halogen lamps

The advantages of halogen ceiling lamps are as follows::

  • they are smaller in size, but shine approximately 2 times brighter in comparison with lamps of a similar type that use conventional reflector lamps of the same power;
  • during installation, a halogen lamp requires approximately 1.5-2 times less space (distance) between the solid concrete and suspended ceiling;
  • Since the voltage of RGLs is quite low, they do not pose a danger to human health when switched on.

Let's look at the rules in accordance with which recessed luminaires for the ceiling using halogen lamps should be selected.:

  1. the purchase of lamps should be carried out simultaneously with the purchase of lamps, so as not to make a mistake with the dimensions of the base and reflector;
  2. for wet rooms, low-voltage halogen lamps should be used;
  3. one step-down transformer can be used simultaneously for several ceiling lamps, and its power must be higher than the total power of the lamps;
  4. The diameter of the flanges of ceiling spotlights on the RGL should be 7-10mm greater than the diameter of the holes made in the suspended ceiling for lighting installation.

Advice! You must always be aware of the strong heating of halogen lamps. It is necessary to ensure that the decorative flanges and frames of lamps for GL are metal, that the diffusers, shades and decorative decorations are made of glass, and that the sockets are ceramic.
